42Floors? PDA: The War For Talent Among Startups Needs A New Approach. Here?s Why

WeWantYou-black-400Startups do the darndest things. As you may or may not have seen, Y Combinator startup 42Floors made a bold and fairly unprecedented move today -- as hiring goes, in any case. 42Floors Co-founder Jason Freedman had been following the work of UPenn sophomore Dan Shipper on Hacker News. The two had chatted a few times by phone and on Twitter, and Freedman was so impressed by the quality of Shipper's programming, design skills, and smarts, that he decided to publicly offer the sophomore a job -- via the company blog. Why? Well, first off, it was likely to turn into publicity both for Shipper and for 42Floors. So there's that. It was also done somewhat with an ulterior motive. As Freedman says in his post, the team believes that "hiring is dead." And he has a point: If you're looking to hire the kind of talent that is out there actually building products, companies, etc. (and who isn't?), those men and women likely aren't filling out job applications. So if you want them, you have to court them.

Nicki Minaj Releases Official Music Video for "Starships"

First, Sophia Grace & Rosie. Now, Nicki Minaj.

Just a couple days after the cutest girls ever performed this artist's smash, "Starships," on Ellen, Nicki herself has come out with the official music video for this single.

How does it compare to simply sitting back and watching Sophia Grace & Rosie? Decide for yourself:

Nicki Minaj - "Starships" (Official Video)

Minaj, who is also not surprisingly back on Twitter, also says she'll release a second video - and you might be in it!

“All that fans that were in Times Square [for my surprise Nokia concert] will get to be in the video, which is gonna be super exciting for them to see themselves,” she told MTV News. “I’m actually really interested in seeing it. I didn’t really know how they were going to make it all happen.”

OnSports Raises $2M Led By Floodgate To Be The Mobile Watercooler For Sports Fanatics

onsports-appleIn both sports and the tech industry, you win some and you lose some. Even though OnSports chief executive Aaron Krane got a nasty black eye this week in a pick-up basketball game, his company just closed a $2 million round led by Mike Maples' Floodgate fund. The company, also known as Hitpost, makes this mobile app OnSports which has live discussions, polls and news about sports. It's aiming to be the destination where sports fans can chatter or rage about their most-loved or hated teams and players.?The app has more than 1 million downloads on Google Play and something less than that on iOS. While Krane didn't share stats on active usage, he did say that there are "tens of thousands" of discussions and votes per day. Krane, who used to work at the social gaming company that Google acquired called Slide, says there is an unexploited sweet spot in between freemium games like Zynga Poker and sports media. OnSports recently launched a better way for fans to create polls and stories about sports.

RIM's first BlackBerry 10 device may come as early as October

RIM's first BlackBerry 10 device may come as early as October

It's no secret that there's currently a sense of urgency in Waterloo, but if a recent report from N4BB is accurate, it seems that both consumers and enterprise are bound to benefit. According to the site's confidential source, Research in Motion is preparing to reveal its first BlackBerry 10 device in mid-August and will have the product in the hands of consumers by October. We'd previously known that RIM intends to have these units in the hands of developers next month, which gives a bit of credence to this most recent revelation. As for what consumers may expect, the first device is said to offer just a touchscreen, whereas we'll need to wait until Q1 of next year to see a handset with a physical QWERTY keyboard. As you'll recall, the company's previous leader, Mike Lazaridis, previously stated that consumers wouldn't see a BlackBerry 10 device until the end of the year, but this was due entirely to a shortage of the chipset that RIM deemed crucial to its manufacture. Perhaps Mr. Heins was able to light a bit of a fire under the company's partners, no?

RIM's first BlackBerry 10 device may come as early as October originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Apr 2012 21:14:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
