WASHINGTON -- Stephanie Cutter still doesn't understand why Mitt Romney's campaign did not more forcefully defend its candidate's business experience.
Cutter, who served as President Barack Obama's deputy campaign manager in the 2012 election, said on Friday that the Romney campaign's failure to aggressively respond to the attacks on Bain Capital was one of its biggest mistakes.
"I never understood why they never pushed back on our attacks on his business experience," Cutter said at the seventh annual RootsCamp conference for progressive organizers in Washington, D.C. "He ran largely on an argument that, 'I understand the real economy, I know how to fix this and the president doesn't -- he's never been in the real economy,' with his only credential his Bain experience."
The Obama campaign hammered Romney on Bain during the campaign, essentially painting the former Massachusetts governor as a corporate takeover artist who founded a firm that specialized in outsourced U.S. jobs.
While some prominent Democrats initially criticized the Obama campaign for "attacking private equity," the campaign didn't back down.
"We weren't making an argument ... that Bain was bad," Cutter said on Friday. "We were making an argument that this experience does not qualify you to be president of the United States or to understand the real economy. We obviously worked hard to tear that down, and they never built it back up. I never understood why."
Cutter isn't alone in her confusion on the Romney strategy. GOP political strategist Karl Rove, whose Crossroads groups spent more than $300 million in the 2012 election on candidates -- who, for the most part, lost -- also said on Fox News after the election that the Romney campaign should have fought back faster.
"The first group to respond to the attacks on Bain Capital was not the Romney campaign, it was American Crossroads with an ad in July. We don't do defense all that well," Rove said, adding that it was sometimes more effective to have the candidate appear in an ad and respond directly to the charges being leveled.
"I don't know if they didn't have a good understanding as to the deals that we were talking about, or the history of Romney at Bain, but I never understood why they didn't make a counter-argument to what we were saying -- which was his sole credential," Cutter said. "Remember, it was really the only thing he put on the table to qualify him as president."
Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom did not return a request for comment on Cutter's remarks.
After months of fervently trying to move the conversation away from Bain, the Romney campaign did finally bring it back in August. The Republican National Convention highlighted individuals connected to Bain who all portrayed Romney as a strong leader with integrity, and as someone who would be able to save a struggling U.S. economy just as he turned around failing businesses.
Cutter also pointed to Romney's rightward shift in the GOP primary as a problem, noting he was never fully able to recover.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Reflecting a war-weary nation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly Thursday for an accelerated withdrawal of U.S. forces from Afghanistan after more than a decade of fighting.
The strong bipartisan vote of 62-33 sends a clear message to President Barack Obama and the military as they engage in high-stakes talks about the pace of drawing down the 66,000 U.S. troops there, with a White House announcement expected within weeks.
Although the vote was on a nonbinding amendment to a defense policy bill, its significance could not be discounted amid the current discussions.
Thirteen Republicans, including Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, the top GOP lawmaker on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, backed the measure.
Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Ore., its chief sponsor, argued that al-Qaida is stronger in other parts of the world and that nation-building in Afghanistan has gone off track. His measure endorsed Obama's timetable to withdraw all combat troops by the end of 2014 but pressed for a quicker pace, without specifying how that would be achieved.
"It is time to end this war, end the longest war in United States history," Merkley said during Senate debate.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Thursday the U.S. will need to keep troops in Afghanistan even after the combat mission ends in 2014 because al-Qaida is still present in the country and is trying to strengthen its influence.
He would not say how many American troops he thinks will be needed to conduct that mission, nor did he mention a time period.
"The goal here is an enduring presence therefore that will direct itself toward three important missions. One is obviously counterterrorism to insure that we continue to go after whatever al-Qaida targets remain in Afghanistan," Panetta told reporters at a Pentagon news conference.
He added that the United States also will have to train and assist the Afghan forces while providing support.
The overall defense bill authorizes $631 billion for weapons, ships, aircraft and a 1.7 percent pay raise for military personnel. The White House threatened to veto the legislation in its current form, citing limits on the president's authority in handling detainees at the U.S. military facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and restrictions on cuts to the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve.
The Senate hopes to wrap up its version of the bill by week's end. It then would have to be reconciled with the legislation the House passed in May. The House bill calls for Obama to maintain a force of at least 68,000 troops through the end of 2014.
The Senate eliminated one provision that had attracted White House objections. In a strong bipartisan vote Wednesday, the Senate voted to allow Pentagon investment in alternative fuels.

PARIS (Reuters) - Libya is still in the race to save France's Petit-Couronne refinery from liquidation, trade unions said late on Tuesday, as the embattled workers press the French government to help bidders or requisition the plant.
France's Industry Minister said earlier this month he had received a non-binding letter of interest from Libya's sovereign wealth fund to buy the refinery of insolvent Swiss refiner Petroplus.
But French media said this week the Libyan Investment Authority had withdrawn its bid to take over the refinery, the oldest in France, citing a report from Libya's LANA news agency.
"The Libyans were withdrawing yesterday, but today they're not withdrawing anymore, they're still there, so much the better," Yvon Scornet, the trade union representative for the refinery, told reporters outside the Prime Minister's office.
The chairman of the Libyan Investment Authority, Mohsen Derregia, told Reuters last week they had started due diligence to invest in the refinery and would send a team to France to evaluate the investment opportunity.
"Now they have access to the data room," Scornet told Reuters on Tuesday after a late evening meeting with government advisors.
French daily newspaper Le Monde said earlier this month that the French government favored a deal with Libya. Unions prefer a bid by Dubai-based NetOil.
"We have a bid which is well advanced, it's NetOil's. We ask the government to take its responsibilities. If the government needs to do something to tip the balance in their favor, it should do it," Scornet said.
NetOil, a company led by Middle Eastern businessman Roger Tamraz, submitted an improved offer after a court in Rouen in northern France rejected its initial bid on financial and technical grounds earlier this month.
The court has reset to February 5, 2013, the new deadline to submit bids for the refinery and will review offers next week.
But unions want the sale process to be sped up, as a oil reprocessing deal with former owner Shell that has kept the plant alive since January is due to stop mid-December.
"We can't wait until February, unless Shell accepts to continue producing with us, which they don't want at the moment," Scornet said.
"If we can't manage that, the government should requisition the refinery, and keep it under protection for one, two or three years, when the market is better and industry picks up."

Flipping through one of Psychology Today?s recent issues, my eyes focused on a short article ?Just Give In. Five Indulgences that actually boost self-control? by Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D.
What are these five indulgences? Personally, I was hoping chocolate was on the list. (Unfortunately, it?s not!) McGonigal narrows it down to these five things: a single espresso, an afternoon nap, a snack, YouTube and reality television.
The author writes that ?Willpower diminishes as the day wears on, but anything that reduces stress, boosts your mood, or recharges your energy can also reboot your self-control.?
Even ?reality TV??
Last night, after watching various contestants on a popular reality show sing for 90 minutes, I felt like falling asleep. Willpower? I must be watching the wrong program. Survivor might give me some energy: watching people trudge through swamps and sleep in tents, screaming at each other and falling in ?love? the next episode.
I kept reading, hopeful that the small paragraph devoted to the indulgence of reality television would explain our culture?s obsession with watching other people. People on a screen and not, say, upstairs in a different room or a phone call away.
?Willpower is contagious,? the author continues. ?Many reality shows feature people working hard to overcome obstacles as they lose weight, face their fears, or organize their clutter.?
I paused reading and recalled a past co-worker who spent, unfortunately, at least 30 minutes every single day talking about her favorite show, The Biggest Loser. We worked side-by-side and so this was particularly irritating, but even more so was the fact that she spent time talking to me ? and anyone else who would listen ? about her diets. She had a new diet every week and none of them worked.
I guess the show?s ?willpower? did not translate to her lifestyle. Sort of like how I can?t sing a note despite watching all of these silly singing shows.
The article concludes with ?You can ?catch? extra self-control just by watching someone pursue a goal.? Hmm. While the author of this article believes that television can boost willpower and productivity, I disagree. Watching television is a sedentary activity and it uses very few brain cells ? feeding your dog uses more. [Ed. - Although it may be a common popular perception, there's also little research that supports the idea that reality TV shows can help a person with their own willpower or act as a personal motivator.]
So, what?s the verdict? The reality is that watching reality television is a form of escape. I doubt it promotes ?self-control? (am I the only one who eats dinner while watching television?) but it has ingrained its way into our culture.
That aside, watching the presidential debates far exceeds the drama I have witnessed in any episode of Survivor. In the end, ?real life? is reality.

General Motors is getting Siri-ous about its voice-activated infotainment technology.? The maker plans to introduce the Apple iPhone?s popular voice-activated personal assistant technology on three of its Chevrolet models early next year.
The technology will allow a motorist to do many of the things already found in older, less advanced voice-controlled in-car technologies, such as playing music, switching radio stations or plugging in a destination. But Siri was designed to go even further, providing access to an iPhone contact, for example, or checking or adding appointments and even finding a local business, store or restaurant.
?Safe, easy, reliable and portable connectivity is a top priority for our customers and Siri complements MyLink?s existing capabilities to help deliver an incredible driving experience,? said Cristi Landy, Chevrolet?s small car marketing director, referring to the brand?s current infotainment technology.
The technology will be offered in the conventionally powered Chevrolet Sonic subcompact and Spark minicar, as well as the new 2014 Spark EV battery-electric vehicle.? It will connect to MyLink via those vehicles? Bluetooth technology. And GM will now place a special Siri activation button on the steering wheel, similar to the button many vehicles already have to activate conventional voice-controlled technologies.
The three models appeal to a typically youthful, tech-savvy audience and GM estimates as much as 90 percent of their buyers have smartphones already. But Siri could be integrated later into other models. The maker has also announced plans to add a next-generation version of the ChevyMyLink system to the upcoming remake of its big Impala.
Apple introduced Siri on the last version of its iPhone 4 series and it is standard on all new iPhone 5 models. The maker has also indicated its interest in working with manufacturers to get the feature integrated into vehicles by the addition of a dedicated ?Siri button,? but marketing manager Landy boasted that, ?Chevrolet has announced that Siri Eyes Free capability will be available in the Spark and Sonic well before the luxury brands
The Eyes Free mode will block still more complex activities that might prove to be a distraction, such as those that would require a motorist to look at the phone or the car?s video screen to take action.
Distracted driving has become a major concern among safety advocates, U.S. Department of Transportation Chief Ray LaHood recently estimating as much as 11 percent of all highway fatalities may be linked to roadway distractions such as texting. Proponents, however, insist that voice controlled technologies, such as Siri, can reduce distracted driving.
Other automakers, including Mercedes-Benz, Chrysler, Honda and Toyota are reportedly working with Apple to add Siri capability. Mercedes-Benz has already announced a voice-control feature it has described as iPhone-like, though it has not confirmed plans to add a Siri button.
Infotainment technology, especially those allowing voice control, have become all but essential for automakers hoping to appeal to buyers in the digital age.
?We have more people coming to Ford because they know we have better infotainment technology,? said Jim Farley, Ford Motor Co.?s global marketing director, during an interview with TheDetroitBureau.com.
Ford was one of the early pioneers of the technology with its Sync system which was developed through a partnership with Microsoft. But it has also discovered that infotainment systems can be both good news and bad.? The maker has taken sharp hits from consumers and critics alike for problems in operating its in-car technologies. Ford this week announced an updated version of its MyFordTouch system for the 2014 Fiesta minicar that should be easier to use.
A critical goal for makers is to simplify the operation of such technologies, with an emphasis on allowing motorists to use conventional speech rather than having to learn rigid command language that might require a series of steps to perform an otherwise simple process like pairing a smartphone.
Along with the Siri feature, the Chevy MyLink system is expanding its ability to integrate various smartphone apps to access a motorist?s choice of music, for example. And in another potential breakthrough, some Chevrolet models can link to the BringGo navi app. Based on a smartphone, it is available for just $50, a fraction of the cost for a typical in-car navigation system.

If the upcoming L.A. Auto Show is any indication, American motorists are in for a green holiday season.
A preliminary estimate shows as many as 50 new cars, trucks and crossovers will make their debut during the annual event, the first big U.S. auto show of the 2013 model?year.?
A sizable chunk of those new models will be battery-based, including everything from conventional hybrids to pure battery-electric vehicles. But the L.A.?show also will point out how even conventional gasoline powertrain technology continues to become more and more environmentally friendly.
Among the most significant debuts already announced for Los Angeles, Honda will introduce its first plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle, the Accord PHEV.??
Ford will offer a pair of its own plug-ins, the Fusion Energi sedan and the C-Max Energi ?people-mover.???
The list of pure battery-electric vehicles, or BEVs, will include the new Fiat 500e and the Chevrolet Spark EV, General Motors first fully electrified model since it pulled the EV1 from production just before the turn of the new Millennium.
During a recent two-day media background session, GM revealed some ambitious plans for its electrification program ? which began with the December 2010 launch of the Chevrolet Volt plug-in and which will soon add both the Spark EV and the upcoming Cadillac ELR plug-in. In all, the maker hopes to sell 500,000 battery-based vehicles between now and 2017.
?Plug-based solutions will play a significant role in our technology portfolio going forward,? said global product development chief Mary Barra.
Nissan may be even more ambitious.? Before the end of the decade, it intends to be selling as many as 500,000 battery-based vehicles annually, with products including the planned Infiniti LE battery-electric vehicle set to join the Nissan Leaf it launched about the same time the Chevy Volt hit showrooms.
For its part, the Fusion and C-Max Energi plug-ins will be part of a wave of eight advanced battery vehicles Ford plans to launch within the next couple years, according to Ken Czubay, the maker?s vice president of U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service.
But not everyone is quite so upbeat. Though he will try to wear a smile during the debut of the 500e, Fiat/Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne has dubbed battery cars ?economic lemons,? a reference to the reality that the underlying technology is so expensive manufacturers have to absorb a significant portion of the price tag in order to win over consumers.??
By some estimates, the current crop of BEVs and PHEVs cost at least $10,000 more to produce than they are selling for ??before a buyer works in the available federal and state tax credits.
And even then, a new study by J.D. Power and Associates warns that, ?Electric vehicles will remain a very small part of the U.S. market unless automakers can lower prices and demonstrate the economic benefits to consumers.?
No wonder the brand new Honda Fit EV and Toyota RAV4-EV models that will be displayed in L.A. will only be sold at a limited number of California dealerships for at least the next few years.? Critics deride those offerings as ?compliance cars,? built only to satisfy strict zero-emission vehicle, or ZEV, mandates enacted by the demanding California Air Resources Board.
?No one wants to be locked out of the California market,? acknowledges John Mendel, the top American executive at Honda, one of the major makers required to meet the ZEV rules.
Ironically, the L.A.?Auto Show will, yet again, give skeptics the opportunity to promote alternatives to battery power.? The new Dodge Dart Aero model approaches the fuel-efficiency of comparably sized hybrids, note the organizers of the annual Green Car of the Year Award which is announced during the media days at the LA show.
The new Mazda CX-5 SkyActiv crossover will also be in contention, another model that relies on the latest breakthroughs in conventional gas power.?
And the Ford Fusion was named a finalist as much for its advanced, gas-powered EcoBoost engine as for its hybrid and plug-in hybrid options. Only the new Toyota Prius C and Ford C-Max models, among the five finalists, are exclusively battery-based.
The Green Car of the Year Award has notably honored diesels on several occasions. And past winner Audi will bring four new diesels to the LA Auto Show this year, including high-mileage versions of its A6, A7, A8 and Q5 models. Set to start rolling out next year, they?re expected to deliver hybrid-like fuel economy ?but without sacrificing performance,? proclaims Audi of America President Scott Keogh.
While Californians may like to think of their state as the greenest in the country, the reality is that they still appreciate muscle. According to Mercedes-Benz, a full 25 percent of all the maker?s high-performance AMG models are sold in Southern California.
So, no surprise that among the several debuts planned by the German maker it will reveal the fastest production car it has ever built, the 622-horsepower SLS AMG Black Series. (For the moment, Mercedes has not yet committed to bringing a battery-powered version of the 2-seater, the SLS E-Cell, to the U.S. market.)
Bentley, Jaguar and Porsche will also reveal new high-performance products at the LA Convention Center. But these days, one can be mean and green. Or, at least, greener. The new Porsche Carrera 4S will get a big bump in horsepower ? even while delivering about 15% better fuel economy than the outgoing model.
And BMW will bring to LA a version of its upcoming i8 plug-in, the first in a new line of sporty, battery-based vehicles that will also include the i3 battery-electric city car.
The LA Auto Show has a tradition of focusing on green technology.? But California itself has a history of setting the trends that eventually sweep across the rest of America. So what you see at the Los Angeles Convention Center later this month is likely to influence what you drive wherever you live in the years ahead.?

Iraq could develop its oil and gas infrastructure quickly enough to dominate Middle Eastern energy output within 18 years, according to a poll of industry professionals at the ADIPEC Exhibition and Conference in Abu Dhabi.
According to the survey held by global independent technical advisor to the oil and gas sector GL Noble Denton, 65% of participants said that Iraq has the potential to develop its energy infrastructure at such a pace that it will dominate the region?s output by 2030.
By contrast, 35% of participants thought that inadequate facilities, a disadvantaged economy and an under-developed regulatory framework ? among other issues ? could prevent the country from expanding its oil and gas footprint at speed.
A study published by the International Energy Agency last month suggests that Iraq has the potential to reshape the global energy industry in the near future. According to the report, an increase in oil exports could add a cumulative USD $5 trillion to the country?s economy over the next two decades; a number that would grow its gross domestic product five-fold.
Moss Daemi, GL Noble Denton?s Executive Vice President for the Middle East and Africa, said: ?Iraq?s oil and gas industry shows huge promise, but the country has some major infrastructure challenges to overcome if it is to realise its potential. The result of this poll shows that industry professionals are extremely optimistic that the country will be able to tackle those issues.
?With the support of experienced international and regional players, there is every possibility that Iraq?s oil and gas industry can develop a significant infrastructure in a short period of time.?
GL Noble Denton also surveyed ADIPEC delegates? opinion over the United Arab Emirates? (UAE) potential to become energy self-sufficient, and whether the country is investing enough money in maintaining the integrity of its assets.
The poll revealed that oil and gas professionals think the UAE will produce enough gas to fuel its growing domestic energy demands by 2030. 81% of participants said that the development of new gas recovery projects will meet the UAE?s rising demand for the commodity and make the country energy self-sufficient by 2030. By contrast, 19% of participants thought that the UAE will need to continue relying on gas imports to sustain domestic energy consumption over the next 18 years.
Industry professionals also believe that the UAE is making the right investments in asset integrity to meet the country?s rising challenges in production from established oil fields. According to GL Noble Denton?s poll, 72% of participants said that the country?s oil and gas industry is spending sufficiently on optimising asset integrity, as facilities are increasingly called upon to operate beyond the lifespan for which they were originally designed. Only 28% of participants thought that the industry is under-investing in asset performance in the Emirates.

Kickstarter has undoubtedly changed the world by helping makers turn into an? industry to be reckoned with.
As with every brilliant invention the first prototypes always have a few issues that get fixed over time by trial and error. Figuring out a way to respond to issues and criticism quickly and effectively is the essence of growth and Kickstarter definitiely had done a lot but there is still a number of issues that are hard to deal with.
I want to show you an example of something that is happening to us right now.
A few weeks ago somebody launched a kickstarter for a project called smARtDUINO (notice the choice of lowercase/uppercase letters) that is supposed to be a better Arduino and all the rest. There is one of them every week so nothing new there.
The first issue that struck me was that right in the project title they claim to be the ?former ARDUINO?s manufacturer?
Since I?ve never heard of this person I?ve emailed immediately the factory asking if they knew him.
Nobody had ever heard of him, then a long search started that ended with the realisation that he hired two factory workers who used to work for one of the many suppliers that our manufacturing partner uses.
So according to them, if I hire two factory workers from Ford I can claim I used to manufacture Ford cars?
When we got an email from an important worldwide reseller asking us if our manufacturing partner was behind this kickstarter, we really got worried that the confusion was going to create serious damages to us and decided to act.
We asked our lawyer in Italy to get in touch with this person to have some statements rectified while I got in touch with Kickstarter to see if they could act as a mediator in the dispute.
Based on the current available information, it seems that the company that owns the domain (Aldi Technology) doesn?t exist and the person who launched the kickstarter, who claims to be living in Italy (Mr. Dimitri Albino), actually moved to china years ago.
Italian speakers will find some old forum messages linking this person to some dubious activity.
Every week there is a kicstarter where, in a a way or another, somebody claims to be us? Either they call their project ?Arduino? straight away or they ride the Arduino name in more clever ways. We usually email them but not all respond etc etc.
I wrote to kickstarter throught their public feedback form and emailed directly to somebody in marketing I had contact with in the past.
My point was that Kickstarter have to provide some kind of assistance when there are trademark violations or when somebody makes false statements.
Like many important websites have a clear and direct way to raise issues of trademark violations, Kickstarter should also make it easy to raise issues with them.
I got no reply from the marketing person and the next day I get this :
?Hi Massimo,
Thanks for writing in and bringing this to our attention. This is a matter that must be taken up directly with the project creator. You can contact them by clicking ?Contact me? on the project page.
Best,
Kickstarter?
Well I don?t think Kickstarter can remove themselves from the picture, they are not a charity, they make money out of what they do. They should protect their users by better vetting who wants to be funded and by making it easier to raise issues about individual kicstarters.
What does the community think?

Many thousands of traders are welcoming stock-trading robots to do the deductive work for them. This helps you to simply invest accordingly once the programme finds a good trading opportunity so you can make the cash from the exchange that you need and safely at that, but do it on your own plan and on your own time. There are some blinding trading robots out there which are rapidly changing the way that pro traders perform their analysing, too, so here is how it's possible to find one of the greatest of the finest. Personally I would recommend that you go with one of the penny share centered stocktrading robots. Why risk your cash when you have not done any research? That'd be stupid. Before making any investment choices, you have to dedicate time to finding out about the market. Trading software lets you almost invest and practice everything you have learned. There are numerous online strategies that can be employed to raise your information and experience about the market. You now do not have to fixate on the newest market reports.
No more tough forecasting about which shares to get and a lot less mistakes of which can sometimes be rather expensive. The system itself will tell you which stocks are ?winners? primarily based on its careful research into the market. Mix this with the best securities dealing system and you have got an impressive investment tool at hand. Discipline and focus were often out playing some other place. In this time he spotted things about himself and his feelings that might impact on his trading. Everything was O.K but new he wanted help to work on some of his principles and any potential to self sabotage. A perspective coach and new tools helped him with those limiting sentiments and his capability to stay centered and trained thru any conditions.

The first commercially successful video game in history, it arrived in US arcades on November 29 1972, and immediately became a huge hit.
The tennis simulator saw players using paddles to knock a ball across the screen, with the action speeding up as the game progressed.
Originally created for games company Atari by designer Allan Alcorn as part of a training exercise, it proved so enjoyable that a prototype was installed in a California bar.
Mainstream success ... Seventies Liverpool footballer Steve Heighway plays Pong
And when Atari co-founder Nolan Bushnell returned to the bar to find the coin compartment overflowing, he decided to put the game into full production.
It soon enjoyed huge success, with over 19,000 cabinets sold, and a home version released in 1975.
The title has gone on to be updated and remade for almost every console, including the PlayStation, Nintendo DS, and PSP.
It paved the way for the Seventies heyday of the gaming arcades, with 1978's Space Invaders and 1979's Asteroids also huge hits.
MAKERS Atari mark the fortieth birthday of the first hit video game with an enormous version of the title
And to mark its 40th birthday, Atari last week created an enormous version of the game at the Lights Festival in Kansas City, on the side of a 22-storey building.
Guy Cocker, editor of GameSpot UK, said: "While Pong technically wasn't the first video game ever made, it is certainly the one that started the games industry as we know it today."
He added: "Its importance can't be understated - it was the game that launched Atari, was the first game to gain mainstream success both in arcades and the home, and was copied all around the world by companies including Nintendo.
"It's gone on to appear on nearly every games console ever since, and is just as addictive today as it was back in 1972."

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? Congolese officials are in talks Sunday with representatives of M23, the rebel group that last week took control of the eastern Congo city of Goma, according to Ugandan officials.
Ugandan Defence Minister Crispus Kiyonga said that he is mediating discussions to help both sides reach a settlement that would end a violent rebellion that has sucked in Uganda and Rwanda, which both face charges of backing the rebels.
M23 President Jean-Marie Runiga is leading the rebels in the talks, according to Rene Abandi, M23's head of external relations.
Abandi, who is now based in the Ugandan capital Kampala, said M23 representatives met with Congolese President Joseph Kabila in a tense, two-hour meeting that was also attended by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
"He tried to accuse us and we also tried to accuse him," Abandi said of the meeting with Kabila on Saturday. "It was a meeting to have a common understanding of the principle of negotiation. (Kabila) said he's ready to negotiate directly with us."
But some Congolese officials in the capital Kinshasa have said there will be no talks with the rebels unless they quit Goma. A regional summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region in Kampala ? attended by both Kabila and Museveni ? on Saturday called on the rebels to leave Goma and urged Kabila to listen to the "legitimate grievances" of M23.
Despite the regional leaders' demands for the rebel forces to withdraw from Goma, M23 soldiers were visibly in control of the city Sunday. M23 also still held Sake, a contested town 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Goma. The Congolese army attacked the town Saturday, but M23 retained control.
M23 President Runiga said that withdrawal from Goma was "under consideration" and, while M23 did not oppose the idea "in principle," no decision had been taken yet, according to M23 spokesman Lt. Col. Vianney Kazarama, speaking to the Associated Press. Runiga is still in Kampala and no official response to the demands from the regional summit is expected before his return to Congo, said Kazarama in Goma.
"We are waiting to hear from Runiga when he will be back from Kampala," said Kazarama.
"Since May we have asked to meet with President Kabila," said Amani Kabasha, M23's deputy spokesman. "At least now there has been contact. The door is open for talks to find the durable peace that eastern Congo needs."
Government troops remain in Minova, 25 kilometers (15 miles) south of Sake, following a failed attack on M23 last Thursday. Unruly Congo army soldiers had looted residents for the third night running, according to a United Nations official in the town who insisted upon anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press. U.N. peacekeepers patrolled Minova throughout the night to protect civilians from the rampaging government troops.
In Minova, Congo Gen. Francois Olenga, who was recently named head of the Congolese army, held meetings with area commanders . "The country is in danger. We cannot defend our country with traitors," said Olenga to The Associated Press.
Pickup trucks packed with Congolese army soldiers armed with automatic rifles and rocket propelled grenades sped through Minova to regroup at the local soccer stadium. Army soldiers were also walking in the streets, looking for food. Some army soldiers were selling cigarettes on the side of the road.
An M23 communiqu? sent Saturday night claimed that government regiments were moving into attack positions around rebel-held territory.
"Let them attack us!" said M23 spokesman Kazarama. "Do they have the strength? Absolutely not, we are in a strong position."

Have fun with your home bar. Cocktails are meant for celebrations to create good memories with your friends and family.Know you guests and ensure your bar is stocked with what they like to drink. Make them special and taken care of.
Buy enough ice, Have you ever tried to drink a cocktail and it's only got two half melted ice floating on the top and is?barely?cold. It tends to ruin a great thing. You should have 2.5 pounds of ice for every person at your party. If you plan to have an ice bucket or nice stainless buckets filled for your white wines and beers to keep chilled buy enough extra ice to fill those as well. Remember your ice bucket and displays will sit out and melt don't forget to account for that.
Try this drink recipe for a signature cocktail for the night:

5oz ice
1oz Gin

We were on the Radiance of the Seas for the western Caribbean cruise on November 28/04This was our second cruise with Royal Caribbean with our first last year on the larger Adventure of the SeasAfter one cruise with RCI, I expected roughly the same standards with the Radiance and in general, I wasn?t disappointed.
Staterooms:
Our stateroom was an inside aft cabin and we were not disappointed. It was roomy enough and the lighting was adequate. Closet space and drawers were also sufficient for our use. We noticed that the double beds here were actually a bit better than the one we had on the Adventure since we couldn?t really feel the split between the two separate beds like we did last time. If there?s one thing that can be improved is the shower curtain. The one installed was not adequate in keeping in all the water from the shower. The shower on the Adventure utilized a double glass door system which was far superior. Otherwise, the cabin was nice and dark for sleeping at night. Although we heard a little noise from the cabins next to us, it was minimal. We didn?t miss having any window or balcony at all since we were hardly ever in our stateroom. We were either at port or elsewhere on the ship and went back to our cabins just to relax or sleep. We would definitely book an inside cabin again with RCI unless we had a free upgrade.
Dining:
The main Cascades dining room was nice and meals were good. Breakfasts had the same menu every morning. Lunch at the dining room was okay. The dinners were good but not every meal item was a winner. There was the odd appetizer and dessert that was not up to par. One thing that my partner noticed was that the portions of the main courses seemed to be smaller than those served on the Adventure. We usually went upstairs to the Windjammer to get more food after dining at the Cascades. In some parts of the Cascades room, the tables were placed too cramp so walking to out own table was tricky at times. The self serve Windjammer was good. It usually had more variety of food than served downstairs at the Cascades. Breakfast and lunch were busy at the Windjammer but during evenings, most people chose to dine at the Cascades. The two other optional restaurants onboard Portafino and Choppe House were available at $20 US per person but we never tried them since the meals already included at the Cascades and Windjammer were fine by us. Other passengers who did go to these optional rooms told us that they were nothing special. There was another cafe available during late evenings called the Seaview and they provided fare such as sandwiches, salads and burgers. This was a nice feature. One thing we did object to was that they charged for the coffee and tea there. There was also a specialty coffee place on the main centrum of the ship and they also charged. We had more availability of free beverages on the Adventure.
Service:
The service by the stateroom attendants and dining room staff was top notch as expected.
Entertainment:
The evening shows at the Aurora Theatre were a mix of the ship?s own crew of dancers and singers plus some outside comics and singers. In general, the shows were quite good. We would have liked them to mix up the entertainment each night rather than allocate music, comedy and magic into different evenings. Rather than an entire show of magic, we would have preferred each night featuring a variety of entertainment. Live music around the ship was a nice added touch.
Amenities:
Although smaller than the Adventure, the Radiance had fine amenities including the gym/spa, mini golf, pools and the shops. There was internet access but at 50 cents per minute, the service is a bit steep. There were things to do during the days at sea such as art auctions, cooking demos and dance classes. However, we felt that there was more offered on the Adventure. As for embarking and disembarking, there was no problem on the Radiance. The 6th level contained the casino and for non-smokers, this was a problem. The ventilation in the casino was not great and as a result, cigarette smoke travelled to adjacent areas near the casino. My partner wanted to avoid going on the 6th level whenever possible.
In summary, we enjoyed our cruise on the Radiance of the Seas. However, comparing it to the larger Adventure of the Seas, we would rate the larger ship a bit higher. We liked the huge promenade on the Adventure which was not available on a smaller ship like the Radiance. Given a choice in the future, we would opt for the larger ship. For first time cruisers, the Radiance would still be a good ship to vacation on. This is simply the case of where veteran cruisers would expect more especially if they have been on higher end ships.

In a small, sun-drenched studio outside of Boston, Benoit Rolland runs his hand over thin, dark planks of wood. He taps them to demonstrate how the percussive sound of each species varies. The pitch is higher in one plank, the reverb more durable in another.
By his count, Rolland is one of only a handful of people in the world who makes custom bows for violins, violas and cellos. It?s a traditional kind of work ? another Frenchman, Fran?ois-Xavier Tourte, settled the form of the bow in the 18th century, and most bows today are based on this design.
Though Rolland?s name might not?be widely known, his bows are played on instruments with recognizable names like Stradivarius and Guarneri. Rolland has been making custom bows since the early '70s, and today he can produce as many as 30 in a year, selling them for up to $15,000 apiece.
In almost any other field, a machine would have replaced his job, but his clientele are the professional musicians who travel the world performing at the top of their field.
Befitting such an expensive piece of equipment, Rolland?s process for designing a bow is very specific. It begins with a private audience.? If a customer lives abroad, he asks for them to send an audio recording.
?After a small while, I?m able to guess the bowings,"?Rolland said. "And then the fingerings. And the fingerings are very important, because they are linked to the bowings. And the bowings are linked to the fingerings.??
"It's a circle,"?Rolland explains. "When I can get into that circle, I have a fair idea of who I?m working for.?
After listening to the performer, Rolland chooses a specific wood and works up a design that accommodates their strengths and weaknesses. He prefers to use a species of Brazilian wood called pernambuco,? celebrated for its tone, strength and longevity.
Unfortunately, pernambuco is an endangered species, and it?s impossible to buy more of the rare timber.
Rolland has a stockpile of the wood that he hopes will last the rest of his life, but anticipating the eventual disappearance of pernambuco, he began experimenting with alternative materials. In the 80s, he was one of the first people to create a bow from carbon fiber.
Unlike the warm sound of a wooden bow, Rolland says, ?Carbon fiber conveys a very fast vibration. It?s not an advantage. We have to damp the vibration a little bit to give more warmth through the sound.?
His innovations have won him recognition. In October, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship, also known as a ?Genius Award,? for the improvements he has made to the enduring wooden stick.
One of his recent changes to bow design was to slightly alter the angle at which the bow hair sits on an instrument, yielding greater sound and improved control.
?I do not plan nor intend to change the sound of the violin, otherwise it wouldn?t be a violin anymore," he says. "But, you know, violin playing is very difficult.?
When asked what he has in store, he demurs. ?I have several inventions that are cooking,"?he says with a grin. "I don?t say that because I?m French. ?

Penetrating Oil is a low-viscosity oil that is useful to help free rusted parts, such as nuts on a bolt, to aid in removal. The name comes from the oil being able to penetrate into the narrow space between screw or bolt threads. You can purchase the commercial version at any hardware store, but you can make your own in a pinch if you have access to acetone and automatic transmission fluid made from dextron/mercron.
Instructables user points out that this DIY recipe worked better than the commercial product when having to remove a rusted brake rotor from an axle and was much less expensive as well. To make your own just mix up a 50/50 batch in a cheap spray bottle and shake that bottle quite well before using as the two liquids separate like oil and water. You probably already have acetone around the house (paint thinner or nail polish remover) but the automatic transmission fluid might have to be procured at a local auto parts store if you don't regularly maintain your vehicle.
