More issues have turned up on the Martin Olav Sabo Bridge, a bike and pedestrian bridge in south Minneapolis, which was closed last week after cables on the bridge broke loose. Cracks have been found on a third cable support, on a device referred to as a diaphragm plate.
Heidi Hamilton, deputy director of the Minneapolis Public Works department, updated council members on the bridge at Tuesday morning?s meeting of the Transportation & Public Works committee of the Minneapolis City Council.
The city of Minneapolis and Hennepin County have jointly hired the Northbrook, Ill.-based Wiss, Janny, Elstner Associates Inc. (WJE) to inspect the bridge and determine what caused the cables to break loose. It is expected that it will take months to determine answers.
In the wake of the incident, light rail transit (LRT) service and traffic were disrupted. Light rail service was restored on Friday afternoon; Hiawatha Avenue reopened on Sunday evening. The $5.1 million bridge opened in November 2007.
