L.A. mayor: 'Carmageddon II' turns into 'Carmaheaven'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Sunday called "Carmageddon II," the sequel to last year's shutdown of one of the nation's busiest freeways, a success and thanked drivers for staying off the road and keeping the weekend traffic unusually light.

Bridgework that forced the closure of Interstate 405 was completed and lanes of the freeway through the Sepulveda Pass began reopening Sunday night, hours ahead of a planned reopening for the Monday morning commute.

The connector ramps to Interstate 10 were opened first, followed by the northbound lanes and the on-ramps, police Det. Gus Villanueva said. The process will be repeated for southbound lanes.

A similar closure occurred last year to demolish portions of the Mulholland Drive bridge to allow construction of an additional freeway lane. Like last year, city residents heeded months of warnings to stay off the road and the fear of an epic traffic jam never materialized.

Villaraigosa says his hope for a "Carmaheaven" came true and thanked drivers for their cooperation.

"The real stars of this sequel were the motorists who took advantage of a car-free weekend and stayed off the road," he said.

Like Villaraigosa, some drivers couldn't resist comparing the scenario to a movie.

"It's like that movie 'Vanilla Sky,' ... where Times Square is empty," Sterling Gates told KABC-TV. "It's kind of like that. We're known for our traffic, and it's just nothing."

The closed, 10-mile section of the 405 carries about 500,000 motorists each day on a typical weekend, according to the Los Angeles Times. California Department of Transportation officials said that in order for "Carmageddon II" to be a success, at least two-thirds of those drivers need to stay off the road.

The rare sight of a carless freeway attracted many onlookers, including seven people who were cited for sneaking onto the roadway, the California Highway Patrol said.

Last year, three people slipped onto the freeway at the crack of dawn and snapped photos of themselves enjoying a gourmet meal on an eerily empty freeway.

Crime at the US-Mexico border goes corporate

BROWNSVILLE, Texas ? When a regional manager for the Mexican Gulf cartel moved his operation to a more lucrative territory on the border, he took along not only his armored trucks and personal army, but also his department heads and a team of accountants.

It's easy to lose sight of the fact that, ultimately, these criminal organizations are complex businesses, relying on careful accounting as much as assault rifles.

Rafael Cardenas Vela testified this week about the organization's structure and operations in such detail that it could compose a short course ? Narco 101, perhaps.

The U.S. Border Patrol sector that covers much of the Gulf cartel's territory seized just over 1 million pounds of marijuana in 2011 and apprehended nearly 60,000 illegal immigrants.

Bahraini teenager killed in Friday's protest

DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahraini riot police killed a teenager when they fired shotgun pellets during clashes with protesters following a demonstration on Friday, the country's opposition said on Saturday, the second young protester to die in six weeks.

Thousands rallied on Friday in an officially authorized protest called by the main opposition group al-Wefaq, but as the event ended around 100 demonstrators clashed with police.

Witnesses on Friday said riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse those demonstrators, who, the authorities said, were throwing petrol bombs and wielding iron bars.

The police described the incident after the protest as a "terrorist attack" on a security patrol that "targeted the lives of members of the patrol" late on Friday evening.

The police had defended themselves "according to their legal authority", a statement said, confirming one of the protesters had died.

Bahrain, headquarters of the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, has been in turmoil since mass demonstrations started at the height of Arab Spring unrest last year, led by its Shi'ite Muslim majority.

The protests were put down by the Sunni monarchy which imposed martial law and invited Saudi Arabia to send troops in support.

In mid-August a 16-year-old protester was killed in a similar incident, when police opened fire with birdshot during clashes after a demonstration, opposition activists said.

The opposition says more than 45 people have been killed in protests since martial law was lifted in June 2011. The Interior Ministry says protesters have injured more than 700 police officers and that the authorities have exercised restraint.

Al-Wefaq named the dead protester as 17-year-old Ali Hussain Nima and distributed photographs show a body covered in blood and flecked with birdshot wounds. The pictures could not be independently verified.

Bahrain and Saudi Arabia accuse Iran of fomenting the unrest in the island kingdom and among Saudi Arabia's Shi'ite Muslim minority, who mostly live in a province situated next to Bahrain. Iran denies the accusations.

The death comes a day after the U.N. Human Rights Council appointed a Bahraini as the Asia representative to its advisory committee.

Sikh Genocide Case Against India's Congress Party Moves Another Step Forward in US Court

Sikh Genocide Case Against India's Congress Party Moves Another Step Forward in US Court

NEWS REPORTS

?

?

?

US Federal Judge Robert Sweet has ruled that the Congress Party of India has been "properly served" with the summons in the November 1984 Sikh Genocide case.

Last week, on denying the motion of the Congress (I) to dismiss the Sikh Genocide case for lack of service, the court held that the plaintiffs' evidence establishes that service was effected properly in accordance with the Hague Convention.

Since the filing of the law suit by "Sikhs For Justice" against Congress (I) for conspiring, aiding, abetting and carrying out genocidal attacks on Sikhs during November 1984, the Congress party has been challenging the US Court's jurisdiction at every juncture - and has lost at every juncture so far.

Citing the steps taken by Sikhs for Justice (?SFJ?) to effect service on the Congress, Judge Sweet, in his 82 page ruling, held that "the Plaintiffs have demonstrated that they complied with the Hague Convention procedures and that any failure of compliance was solely on the Central Authority to participate in the process. In addition the INC (Congrees Party) was aware of the litigation and had actual notice of the suit."

?Under these circumstances the INC was served in accordance with the Hague Convention and service is valid," concluded Judge Sweet.

While ruling on the Congress (I)'s claim that US Court lacks personal jurisdiction to hear November 1984 Sikh Genocide, Judge Sweet held that the plaintiffs have? yet to establish personal jurisdiction of the US Court over Congress (I).?

However, Judge Sweet granted the Plaintiffs? request for "jurisdictional discovery" to determine the relationship between Indian National Overseas Congress (INOC) and Indian National Congress (INC)".

However, while granting jurisdictional discovery, Judge Sweet stated: "Plaintiffs? allegations demonstrate a relationship between the INC and INOC to justify jurisdictional veil piercing," which is essential to determine the court's personal jurisdiction over the Congress Party.

According to Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor to SFJ, since the filing of the Sikh Genocide case, the rights group has been approached by hundreds of survivors, witnesses and victims of November 1984, who are willing to become party to the pending case against Congress.

SFJ will file a motion before the US Court to include additional plaintiffs and issue a "class certification" in the pending Genocide case. The class will consist of resident and non-resident Sikh men, women and children who survived the attacks in November 1984 and the lawful heirs and claimants of those men, women and children that did not survive.

The class will also consist of Sikhs whose homes, businesses, gurdwaras and personal property was damaged, added the attorney.

SFJ has also announced that it will file a complaint with the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, for allowing S.M. Krishna, a senior Congress (I) leader and India?s External Affairs Minister into the United States, knowing the Congress (I) leader?s involvement in leading attacks on Sikhs during the November 1984 pogroms.

"S.M. Krishna's entry and presence in the United States will be in violation of section 212(a)(3)(E)(ii) & (iii) of INA and section 604 of The International Religious Freedom Act of 1998 which prohibit entry into United States of any individual who is member of an organization involved in human rights violations,? explained Gurpatwant Singh, who practices human rights law in the United States.

According to SFJ, the "US Court's ruling regarding proper service on Congress (I) has brought the victims a step closer to establishing that Congress conspired, aided, abetted and carried out the genocidal attacks on Sikhs during November 1984 in which more than thirty thousand Sikhs were killed".

San Juan and Cincinnati Microsoft Stores to open in November

This weekend, Microsoft launched four more permanent Microsoft Store locations; two in New York and one in New Hampshire and Delaware. Microsoft will keep the ball rolling on its retail store strategy in November with the official announcement of two more opening dates and locations.

The official Microsoft Store Facebook page has confirmed that the Microsoft Store in San Juan, Puerto Rico will open its doors on Thursday, November 1st. Microsoft will also open a new retail location in Cincinnati, Ohio one week later on Thursday, November 8th. Microsoft previously announced it would open a store in Toronto on November 16th, making it the first such store outside the US; Microsoft has a goal of opening 44 of these kinds of stores by mid-2013.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced plans to open over 30 temporary retail stores across the US and Canada in order to sell Microsoft-based products for the 2012 fall and holiday shopping season. So far, there's no word from Microsoft on when any of these temporary "pop up" stores will launch or what products they will have on sale, although we would suspect the Surface tablet will be one of them.

(AP) ? As consumers we want our electronic gadgets to be durable. But as patients, we might want them to dissolve ? inside our bodies.

Scientists reported Thursday that they succeeded in creating tiny medical devices sealed in silk cocoons that did the work they were designed for, then dissolved in the bodies of lab mice. It's an early step in a technology that may hold promise, not only for medicine, but also for disposal of electronic waste.

The new work is "a remarkable achievement" in combining materials to produce a working device, said Christopher Bettinger of Carnegie Mellon University. He works on biodegradable electronics but was not involved in the study.

Doctors already use implants that dispense drugs or provide electrical stimulation, but they don't dissolve. The new work is aimed at making devices that do their jobs as long as needed and then just dissolved, without need for surgical removal or risk of long-term side effects.

In the experiment, the devices ? which look like tiny computer chips ? were designed to generate heat, a potential strategy for fighting infection after surgery by killing germs, said John Rogers of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne, an author of the study.

The devices worked in the mice for more than a week, until their silk coatings dissolved enough for bodily fluids to erode key parts of the devices, he said. After three weeks, the tiny gadgets had basically disappeared.

Someday for people, similar devices might be programmed to monitor the body and release drugs accordingly, or produce electric current to accelerate bone healing, Rogers said.

The researchers used the protective cocoon envelope because silk can be processed to stay intact for varying periods of time ? from seconds to weeks and potentially for years, he said. The device's circuitry itself was built from other materials that degrade in the body, such as magnesium and silicon.

The federally funded research was reported online in the journal Science.

Apart from medicine, the technology offers a way to cut down on electronic waste, or E-waste, if portable consumer devices could be made with decomposing components, the researchers wrote.

And there are other potential uses, too Rogers suggested. For example, such devices could be scattered near a chemical spill to monitor things like chemical concentrations without any need to retrieve them later.

RIM surprises with cash boost and resilient sales; shares surge

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research In Motion Ltd reported a narrower-than-expected loss on Thursday and the struggling BlackBerry maker bolstered its cash reserves, sparking optimism ahead of the launch of its make-or-break line of next-generation smartphones.

Shares of RIM surged 20 percent in after-hours trade on indications the company will have plenty of cash to ramp up production of its new BlackBerry 10 devices and mount a robust marketing campaign for the revamped line, due in early 2013.

It was the biggest jump for the stock since a 50 percent surge in December 2003, underlining the importance of the BB10 launch. The company, which has fallen far behind its rivals in a smartphone market it once dominated, has staked its future on the BB10 and its completely redesigned operating system.

RIM's second fiscal quarter brought shareholders additional glimmers of hope, a break from a succession of dreadful quarterly reports. The company not only generated more revenue than Wall Street had forecast but it topped expectations on the number of devices shipped in the period, which ended on September 1.

"It's very impressive," said Jefferies & Co analyst Peter Misek. "I didn't expect they could execute on the business given the models they have in the market, but they obviously did really well in emerging markets."

RIM was also able to bolster its cash pile by collecting on cash owed to the company, drawing down inventories and cutting costs.

ONE-TIME PIONEER

A one-time smartphone pioneer, RIM has failed to keep pace with rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co, and its stock price has tumbled about 70 percent over the past year while its market share shriveled.

But the latest quarter showed that RIM is still able to lure buyers for its lower-end smartphones in the more price-conscious emerging markets. And that has helped make up for ground the BlackBerry has lost to cutting-edge devices such as Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy S III in North America and Europe.

"RIM and its products, however obsolescent, are still relevant in the parts of the planet where most people live," said CCS Insight analyst John Jackson. "The bad news is that these results have little or no bearing on what remains true, and that is, RIM still needs to execute on BB10."

In an attempt to create a buzz, Chief Executive Thorsten Heins gave a preview of the new smartphone and its features to app developers at an event on Tuesday in San Jose, California.

Analysts said RIM struck the right chords at the event but cautioned that it is hard to evaluate how well the BB10 devices will work in real world conditions until they are on the market.

"We are now just a few months away from our launch and our teams are working night and day to meet the expectations we have of ourselves," said Heins on a conference call after the results were released on Thursday.

Heins said RIM executives have met with dozens of carriers in more than 16 countries in the last few weeks and the feedback on the new devices so far has been overwhelmingly positive.

QUARTERLY RESULTS

Shipments of BlackBerry smartphones were 7.4 million in the quarter, easily outpacing Wall Street's expectation of about 6.9 million.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company reported a net loss of $235 million, or 45 cents a share, in its fiscal second quarter. That compared with a profit of $329 million, or 63 cents, in the same period a year earlier.

Excluding one-time restructuring-related items, the loss came in at $142 million, or 27 cents a share, in the quarter just ended.

Revenue rose to $2.9 billion, a gain of 2 percent from the fiscal first quarter, but the latest result was down about 30 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Analysts, on average, had expected RIM to report a loss of 46 cents a share, on revenues of $2.5 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

"You still have revenue declining 31 percent on a year-over-year basis but it's certainly not the train wreck that a lot of people feared," said BGC Partners analyst Colin Gillis. "They live to fight another day."

CASH PILE

RIM also increased its cash to about $2.3 billion from $2.2 billion in the fiscal first quarter.

"In the last two quarters RIM has done a really good job on collecting on receivables," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, but he cautioned that this was not sustainable over the long run and RIM would have to return to a profitable business model for it to thrive once again.

While RIM has warned that it faces another operating loss in its fiscal third quarter, it expects its cash position to remain stable unless it is hit by restructuring charges.

Wu believes that the company can achieve this by continuing to draw down on its receivables, which stood just shy of $2.2 billion as of Sept 1.

RIM's chief financial officer said the company had entered into a new secured credit facility of $500 million which expires in September 2013, and in the first half RIM realized some $350 million of the up to $1 billion in cost savings it hopes to achieve in fiscal 2013, which ends on March 2 of next year.

The company, which earlier this year said it would cut about 5,000 jobs to save money, said it has already laid off roughly 2,500 workers.

"It's still bad, but it's a much smaller disaster than expected," said Wu. "These stocks all trade on expectations. Expectations were really low, and they were able to beat that."

RIM's U.S.-listed shares surged 20 percent to $8.55 in trade after the closing bell on Thursday.

What To Expect in A Skilled Nursing Facility - Assisted Living Today

Affordable Service Tailored to One?s Budget

Skilled nursing homes have provided an opportunity for senior citizens to have a lifestyle they often dreamed of and envied. With annual expense at some in-house senior care centers approaching close to the entire pension these people draw after their retirement and some living facilities charging more than they could afford in their lifetime, many people question whether they can afford skilled nursing homes for their future. More than a decade ago, this was not possible for an average person. But now, with many such facilities expanding their businesses throughout the country, there are hundreds to choose from, some even affordable than living in a single family home.

High Quality of Life

Once known as a private home care facility for elders and disabled individuals, nursing homes were indeed institutions where the adults, often the ones who were unable to care for themselves in their homes resided. Today, they are simply boarding facilities with a wide range of ?comfort dressing?. Most have health care and extended care services, and the facilities state quite clearly all the benefits they offer before admission.

The majority of nursing homes in the United States are Medicaid and Medicare certified, either for-profit or non-profit organizations. Unlike other assisted living facilities across the country, nursing homes that are skilled have a widely varying mix of boarders. Like all hospitals, each nursing home has its own ?personality?, which requires to be examined by the potential resident to see if it meets his or her needs. A handful of such facilities are affiliated with government agencies and few others are run by private investors.

Features Not Found in Other Senior Care Centers

A substantial difference between a skilled nursing home and other conventional care facilities is the tremendous benefits it provides such as 24 hour supervision, customized meals, group activities, individual attention to residents by trained staffs and help with daily chores. For many residents, skilled nursing home is fun and living a perfect lifestyle.

Skilled nursing homes usually have an atmosphere just like in a hospital where the staffs offer care ? physical as well as psychological ? through occupational therapy, counseling and other means. Many facilities also provide open living option where couples can live with other couples under the same roof. Nevertheless, nursing facilities can serve as viable private home alternatives for elders who otherwise have to choose substandard homes as resident alternatives. Nursing home for an entire life can be particularly satisfying if several senior citizens from a similar background and with common interests live together ? in that way they have one another as a social core group.

Advanced Health Care Programs

The wide range of support provided by nursing homes also includes wound care, monitoring of medication and resident?s overall well-being, managing mild and serious illnesses such as diabetes, heart condition and respiratory problems. Elders with Alzheimer and dementia are given greater priority through specialized care from registered nurses and receive several hours of individual attention from licensed practitioners and aides.

A private skilled nursing home is usually far more accessible for its residents than other assisted living or home care facilities. Residents can walk or take private vehicle provided by the home to and from the campus by themselves or with the help of hired assistance. And they can often walk or take public transportation to their place of interest with those helpers. Moreover, the nursing home normally has easy access and frequently take the residents to cultural attractions, around the place they live in, such as concert, operas, museums and major events that make their organization available to senior citizens. This can be of utmost important for those residents who want to perceive a hobby during their golden years.

Safe and Secured Atmosphere

Part of any skilled nursing home?s environment is the carefully worked out policy nad the degree of safety that it offers to its residents. Almost all good facilities keep the intruders out, have strict supervision on campus and ensures that the residents are comfortable living in the rooms assigned to them. The facility also takes adequate steps to protect the members against fire, smoke and other hazards on a regular basis.

Forecast: U.S. Communications Industry to Accelerate Growth, Hit ...

Investment firm Veronis Suhler Stevenson expects the U.S. communications industry to see a compound annual growth rate of 5.2 percent over the next few years to reach $1.455 trillion in revenue by 2016, almost twice the 2.7 percent growth rate over the past five years.?

Entertainment media spending, a segment that includes box office and recorded music, will accelerate its growth, while subscription TV will expand more, but see its growth rate slow.

In unveiling its latest annual forecast, Veronis spoke of a "return to spending levels not seen since before [the] global economic downturn." And the firm said: "While digital has been a growth driver in select pockets of the Industry in the past, the new data show that digital communications and services - encompassing content, technology and user access - has firmly established itself as the driving force of the industry."

Spending on entertainment and leisure media will increase 4.9 percent to $293.49 billion this year, with strong gains in subscription TV spending expected to offset weaker growth in the entertainment media segment.

Beyond pay TV, digital remains a key growth driver - across various parts of the media and communications industry. In 2006, VSS found that digital-related expenditures represented 16.7 percent of total industry spending. The figure rose to 26.5 percent in 2011 and will expand to 39.3 percent by 2016, it said.

?Digital?s influence is now a constant and significant factor in every sector, segment and sub-segment of the U.S. communications industry,? said John Suhler, co-founder and president of VSS.

The 26th annual edition of the VSS Communications Industry Forecast says that industry spending rose 4.4 percent in 2011 to $1.129 trillion despite a sluggish economy. At the expected growth pace through 2016, the communications industry will remain the fifth-largest industry among 15 economic sectors in 2016, Veronis said.

During the forecast period, the firm expects media segments that saw deep declines during the shift to digital platforms in recent years, such as recorded music and books, to stabilize "as the digital segments of those industries account for the majority of units sold."

Spending on entertainment media fell 0.8 percent to $83.61 billion in 2011 as slight gains in TV programming and video games were offset by declines in home video, recorded music and box office. Overall spending grew at a compound annual growth rate of 0.2 percent from 2006 to 2011.

Entertainment media spending growth is expected to accelerate to 3.4 percent in 2012 to $86.46 billion "driven by TV programming and box office," VSS said. Investments in political and Olympics coverage, the release of new video game consoles and the "revitalized" recorded music market will contribute to an even higher compound annual growth rate of 4.4 percent during the forecast period.

Spending on subscription TV increased 7.4 percent in 2011 to $175.23 billion and is expected to increase 6.5 percent to $186.61 billion in 2012 "as consumers add more programming and services to existing subscriptions and major marketers shift advertising from the broadcast networks to more cost-effective cable networks," VSS said.

From 2006 through 2011, the sector saw spending rise at a 7.3 percent compound annual growth rate. Over the next five years, growth will slow to a 5.8 percent compound rate.

Jani-King Franchise Business Owner Recognized for Outstanding ...

Franchise Leaders Deliver "Franchising Votes" Message to Congress

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - Sep 24, 2012) - Jani-King International franchisee Sal Sinanvoski of Philadelphia, PA was honored recently by the International Franchise Association (IFA) with its annual Franchisee of the Year Award. Franchise business owner-operators representing 31 franchise systems were recognized during the IFA's 13th Annual Public Affairs Conference for their outstanding performance and the contributions they have made to enhance the growth and development of franchise opportunities.

"The IFA is proud to recognize the outstanding efforts of Mr. Sinanvoski with the Franchisee of the Year Award," said IFA Chairman Jon Luther, Chairman, Dunkin'Brands, Chairman, Arby's Restaurant Group. "The franchising community is an important component of the U.S. economy due to the hard work of these exemplary individuals who have helped bolster the growth of the industry."

The Franchisee of the Year Award is a major component of the IFA's Public Affairs Conference, which brings more than 400 franchise business leaders together in Washington, D.C. to carry the key messages of franchising to lawmakers on Capitol Hill. During the two-day event, franchise industry leaders will meet with over 200 congressional offices about issues important to the future of franchising such as tax certainty, healthcare reform and access to credit. The Public Affairs Conference is a powerful way to help forward IFA's advocacy efforts and further increase awareness about how franchise opportunities can contribute to economic recovery and job growth. The event is supported by founding sponsor ADP Small Business Services.

IFA members are highlighting the economic impact of franchising. According to a study conducted for the IFA Educational Foundation by PricewaterhouseCoopers on the economic impact of franchising, there are more than 825,000 franchised businesses in operation across the country which is indirectly responsible for providing 18 million jobs and generating $2.1 trillion in economic output. "As Washington works to strengthen and renew our economy, lawmakers should remember that franchising counts in local communities all across the country," Luther said. "With available credit and sound regulatory policies, franchise businesses like will create the jobs necessary for sustained economic recovery and growth."

Computers match humans in understanding art

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Understanding and evaluating art has widely been considered as a task meant for humans, until now. Computer scientists Lior Shamir and Jane Tarakhovsky of Lawrence Technological University in Michigan tackled the question "can machines understand art?" The results were very surprising. In fact, an algorithm has been developed that demonstrates computers are able to "understand" art in a fashion very similar to how art historians perform their analysis, mimicking the perception of expert art critiques.

In the experiment, published in the recent issue of ACM Journal on Computing and Cultural Heritage, the researchers used approximately 1,000 paintings of 34 well-known artists, and let the computer algorithm analyze the similarity between them based solely on the visual content of the paintings, and without any human guidance. Surprisingly, the computer provided a network of similarities between painters that is largely in agreement with the perception of art historians.

The analysis showed that the computer was clearly able to identify the differences between classical realism and modern artistic styles, and automatically separated the painters into two groups, 18 classical painters and 16 modern painters. Inside these two broad groups the computer identified sub-groups of painters that were part of the same artistic movements. For instance, the computer automatically placed the High Renaissance artists Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Michelangelo very close to each other. The Baroque painters Vermeer, Rubens and Rembrandt were also clustered together by the algorithm, showing that the computer automatically identified that these painters share similar artistic styles.

The automatic computer analysis is in agreement with the view of art historians, who associate these three painters with the Baroque artistic movement. Similarly, the computer algorithm deduced that Gauguin and C?zanne, both considered post-impressionists, have similar artistic styles, and also identified similarities between the styles of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, and Giorgio de Chirico, all are considered by art historians to be part of the surrealism school of art. Overall, the computer automatically produced an analysis that is in large agreement with the influential links between painters and artistic movements as defined by art historians and critiques.

While the average non-expert can normally make the broad differentiation between modern art and classical realism, they have difficulty telling the difference between closely related schools of art such as Early and High Renaissance or Mannerism and Romanticism. The experiment showed that machines can outperform untrained humans in the analysis of fine art.

The experiment was performed by computing from each painting 4,027 numerical image context descriptors -- numbers that reflect the content of the image such as texture, color and shapes in a quantitative fashion. This allows the computer to reflect very many aspects of the visual content, and use pattern recognition and statistical methods to detect complex patterns of similarities and dissimilarities between the artistic styles and then quantify these similarities.

EEX chief says green power trading may start next year

COLOGNE, Germany (Reuters) - Europe's leading power exchange, the EEX, aims to start trading contracts for hydro-electric, wind and solar power in the first quarter of 2013, its chief executive said on Tuesday, a day after the bourse outlined plans for the products.

The EEX would be the first marketplace for tradeable green power futures in mainland Europe. The new contracts should appeal to investors seeking to diversify away from conventional power such as nuclear, and coal and gas-fired, and into the fast-growing green energy sector.

Renewables already contribute about 25 percent of total German power usage.

"We are still discussing how to bundle liquidity in green power futures and how to distinguish between regions," said CEO Peter Reitz in an interview with Reuters.

"We assume that we can start trading (green power contracts) in the first quarter of next year."

According to the plans, the EEX, which offers energy futures out of Leipzig, and its Paris-based partner Epex Spot would offer forward and spot power respectively in the shape of certified guarantees of origin, up to 12 months in advance.

Reitz said the bourse was in talks with national registries of such certificates, in which a fledgling over-the-counter trade has existed for years, to ensure the papers can be tracked and booked along the lines of carbon emission rights.

The bourse would differentiate between Central West Europe (CWE), where it already trades power, gas and CO2, and the Nordic region with its vast hydro and wind resources, he said.

CWE encompasses Germany, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Austria. The Nordic region encompasses Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden.

The EEX, which is majority owned by German-Swiss Eurex , is targeting more diversification outside its flagship power contracts and more partnerships in Europe.

CLEARING TO EXPAND, POWER FUTURES A WORRY

Reitz said that the EEX, which offers clearing services for energy trades on six bourses via its clearing arm ECC, was likely to announce the results of that search later in 2012.

"I assume that this year we will be able to win more partners for clearing services," he said. "We are not bound by any geographical direction but eastern Europe is obviously an interesting market area for partnerships."

Epex Spot provides price coupling services for Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian power exchanges.

Clearing ensures that counterparty risks in commodities trades are reduced.

Reitz also said that gas trading on the EEX was still expanding. Spot gas trade nearly doubled in first-half 2012 over the same period in 2011, while futures trading rose by 60 percent in the first half, though Reitz said growth had slowed somewhat more recently.

But he reiterated worries about declining volumes in the EEX flagship product, power futures, which boomed last decade after successful liberalization.

This was due to the effects of recession in the region and the changing fuel mix in favor of more renewables, he said.

"(Power) traders are reluctant to take up long-term positions," said Reitz. "That is a consequence of regulatory uncertainty and questions about the future market design."

The power futures volume on EEX in the first half of 2012 was down 22 percent year-on-year at 481 terawatt hours (TWh).

LIVINGSTON, Texas (AP) ? What Cleve Foster remembers most about his recent brushes with death is the steel door, the last one condemned Texas inmates typically walk through before their execution.

"You can't take your eyes off that door," he says.

But twice over the past year and a half, Foster has come within moments of being escorted through the door, only to be told the U.S. Supreme Court had halted his scheduled punishment.

On Tuesday, Foster, 48, is scheduled for yet another trip to the death house for participating in the abduction and slaying of a 30-year-old Sudanese woman, Nyaneur Pal, a decade ago near Fort Worth.

It takes just under an hour to drive west from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Polunsky Unit, where the state's male death-row inmates are housed, to the Huntsville Unit, where condemned Texas prisoners have been put to death for nearly a century. The last 485 have been by lethal injection; the first 361, from 1924 through 1964, from the electric chair.

On execution day, the condemned inmate waits, usually for about four hours, in a tiny cell a few steps from the steel door to the death chamber.

Foster, a former Army recruiter known to his death row colleagues as "Sarge," denies his role in the murder. Prosecutors say DNA ties him to the killing and that he gave contradictory stories when questioned about Pal's death.

"I did not do it," he insisted recently from a tiny visiting cage outside death row.

Appeals again were pending in the courts, focusing on what his lawyers argued was poor legal help both at his 2004 trial in Fort Worth and by attorneys early in the appeals process. Similar appeals resulted in the three previous reprieves the courts subsequently have lifted, but his lawyers argue his case should get another look because the legal landscape has changed in death penalty cases.

"I don't want to sound vain, but I have confidence in my attorney and confidence in my God," he said. "I can win either way."

Pal's relatives haven't spoken publicly about their experiences of going to the prison to watch Foster die, only to be told the punishment has been delayed. An uncle previously on the witness list didn't return a phone call Friday from The Associated Press.

Foster, however, shared his thoughts of going through the mechanics of facing execution in Texas ? and living to talk about it.

The process shifts into high gear at noon on the scheduled execution day when a four-hour-long visit with friends or relatives ends at the Polunsky Unit outside Livingston.

"That last visit, that's the only thing that bothers me," he said. "The 12 o'clock-hour hits. A dozen or so guards come to escort you."

By Foster's count, it's 111 steps to the prison gate and an area known as the box cage. That's where he's secured to a chair for electronic scrutiny to detect whether he has any metal objects hidden on his body.

It's the legacy of inmate Ponchai Wilkerson. Wilkerson, asked by the warden if he had a final statement after he was strapped to the death chamber gurney for execution in 2000, defiantly spit out a handcuff key he'd concealed in his mouth.

"You're in handcuffs, you're chained at the ankles, they give you cloth shoes and you have to shuffle to keep them on," he said.

As he waddles the 111 steps, he gets acknowledgement from fellow prisoners who tap on the glass of their cells.

At the prison gate, armed officers stand by as he's put in a van and secured to a seat for the roughly 45-mile trip to Huntsville that he says feels like a "90-mph drive." There are no side windows in the back of the van where Foster, accompanied by four officers, rides to the oldest prison in Texas. Only the back doors have windows.

"It's like stepping back in time, dungeons and dragons," he said of entering through two gates at the back of the Huntsville Unit, more commonly known as the Walls Unit because of its 20-foot-high red brick walls.

Prison officials then hustle him into the cell area adjacent to the death chamber.

"Going inside, it's a little spooky. You can tell it's been there a while," he said. "Everything's polished, but still it's real old. You look down the row. History just screams at you.

"It's almost like 'Hotel California,'" he said, referring to the song by The Eagles. "You can check out anytime, but you can't leave."

Both times he's been there, most recently last September, he's been treated "like a human being," Foster said. Officers look at him but don't smile, he said.

At one point, he saw someone walk by with a bulging envelope that he assumed contained the lethal injection drugs.

At 4 p.m., during his first trip to the death house in January 2011, he was served a final meal. He'd asked for several items, including chicken.

"It tasted so good," he said. "It actually had seasoning on it."

Two hours later, at the start of a six-hour window when his execution could be carried out, he received the Supreme Court reprieve.

Since then, inmates no longer get to make a final meal request. Procedures were changed after a state lawmaker complained that condemned inmates were taking advantage of the opportunity and that murder victims never get that chance.

Foster was looking forward to nachos and chicken, the same food served to other inmates the day last year that he made his second trip to the death house, but he never received it. Instead, his attorney tearfully brought him news of another Supreme Court reprieve just before dinner time.

He asked for a doggie bag but was refused. He was put back in the van and returned to death row.

"I've already told the chaplain: Take the phone off the hook before 4 o'clock," he said, anticipating his next trip Tuesday. "I want to get that last meal."

Jennifer Lawrence heats "House at the End of the Street" at box office

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - This weekend will provide a heat check for Jennifer Lawrence, the young star of "House at the End of the Street," the thriller expected to challenge for the top spot at the box office.

If the low-budget PG-13 movie from Relativity delivers, and industry analysts say it will compete for the top spot with Clint Eastwood's "Trouble With the Curve," it will surely increase the buzz surrounding Lawrence - and that's saying something.

In January, Relativity shifted the original release from April 20, ostensibly to avoid a crowded schedule. But there will be plenty of competition this weekend, too. Besides Eastwood's baseball film "Trouble With the Curve," Open Road Films is rolling out its police drama "End of Watch" and Lionsgate bows "Dredd 3D."

The expansion of the Weinstein Company's "The Master" - which was the No. 1 seller for online ticket broker Fandango Thursday - and the debut of Summit Entertainment's "Perks of Being a Wallflower" highlight the specialty release lineup.

It's a broad slate of movies but their target audiences are diverse, which bodes well for overall box office revenues.

Her turn as Katniss Everdeen in this spring's blockbuster "The Hunger Games" made Lawrence the highest-grossing action heroine of all-time. She has been getting critical raves for her first film comedy role in "Silver Linings Playbook," the David O. Russell film that won the audience award at the Toronto International Festival. And she already has the box-office hit "X-Men: First Class" and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for 2010's "Winter's Bone" under her belt.

Not bad for a 22-year-old. She even sings "All You've Got to Do is Fall in Love" by Benji Hughes in the new film.

Young women are the target audience for "House at the End of the Street," which will be in 3,083 theaters. Elizabeth Shue and Max Theriot co-star, and Mark Tonderai directs. Relativity didn't screen it for critics, but thriller and horror films tend to be review resistant.

Relativity sees it opening in the $10 million range, but analysts have it doing considerably better, as high as $18 million.

"If ?House' does well, it will be seen as a big win for her," Jeff Bock, senior analyst at Exhibitor Relations Company, told TheWrap. "But even if it doesn't, no one's going to hold it against her because this is a small film without a ton of traditional marketing behind it."

Relativity has focused much of its effort on online and mobile phone promotions, including a partnership with Zynga, as it bids to expand the audience beyond the core young female demographic group with young males.

"Dredd 3D" is a remake of the 1995 movie starring Sylvester Stallone in the comic-based tale of a one-man judge, jury and executioner of the future.

Karl Urban straps on the helmet for the title role, as he fights to rid MegaCity of the menacing drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headley).

Olivia Thirlby plays Judge Dredd's mind-reading side-kick and Pete Travis ("Vantage Point") directs.

The reviews has been strong for the film, rated R for its dark themes and lots of 3D violence. MetaCritic gives it a 68 rating, and 85 percent of the reviews are positive on Rotten Tomatoes, as are 72 percent of those on Movie Review Intelligence.

Lionsgate is trying to build on the fan boy buzz that began with a well-received Comic-Con screening in July. In addition to a robust online and social media campaign, the company has screened the film in the Toronto International Film Festival's Midnight Madness slot and the Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas, and at a number of regional screenings that featured the film's stars.

"Dredd" will be in 2,506 locations and on 2,700 screens, 2,200 of which are 3D. The studio sees the film doing between $8 million and $10 million over the three days, the analysts have it a bit higher.

The critics are also high on "End of Watch," an R-rated cop drama written and directed by David Ayer, who wrote the screenplay for 2001's "Training Day."

Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as young officers who are marked for death after confiscating money and firearms from cartel members during a routine traffic stop. Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo and Cody Horn co-star.

Eighty-two percent of the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, as are 69 percent on Movie Review Intelligence. MetaCritic gives it a 70 rating.

The analysts see it doing around $11 million for the three days, but Open Road acquired the $7 million film for much less than that and would be happy with a debut over $8 million.

The Weinstein Company is expanding Paul Thomas Anderson's Scientology-inspired tale "The Master" into 788 theaters in 135 markets. Last week it posted the year's biggest specialty box office opening, taking in $729,745 from five theaters in New York and Los Angeles.

That was a $145,949 per-screen average, easily topping the year's previous highest, which belonged to "Moonrise Kingdom." The analysts see "The Master" doing between $5 million and $6 million this weekend, which would land it in the top ten overall.

Summit Entertainment is debuting teen-targeting "Perks of Being a Wallflower," which stars Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame, Logan Lerman ("Percy Jackson") and Ezra Miller, in four theaters.

It's based on a novel of the same name. Author Stephen Chbosky wrote and directs the film adaptation of the 1990s Pittsburgh-set tale, about an introverted high school freshman (Lerman) taken under the wings of two seniors (Miller and Watson).
