Linking insulin to learning

Though it's most often associated with disorders like diabetes, Harvard researchers have shown how the signaling pathway of insulin and insulin-like peptides plays another critical role in the body ? helping to regulate learning and memory.
In addition to showing that the insulin-like peptides play a critical role in regulating the activity of neurons involved in learning and memory, a team of researchers led by Yun Zhang, Associate Professor of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, show that the interaction between the molecules can fine-tune how, or even if, learning takes place. Their work is described in a February 6 paper in Neuron.
"People think of insulin and diabetes, but many metabolic syndromes are associated with some types of cognitive defects and behavioral disorders, like depression or dementia," Zhang said. "That suggests that insulin and insulin-like peptides may play an important role in neural function, but it's been very difficult to nail down the underlying mechanism, because these peptides do not have to function through synapses that connect different neurons in the brain"
To get at that mechanism, Zhang and colleagues turned to an organism whose genome and nervous system are well described and highly accessible by genetics ? C. elegans.
Using genetic tools, researchers altered the small, transparent worms by removing their ability to create individual insulin-like compounds. These new "mutant" worms were then tested to see whether they would learn to avoid eating a particular type of bacteria that is known to infect the worms. Tests showed that while some worms did learn to steer clear of the bacteria, others didn't ? suggesting that removing a specific insulin-like compound halted the worms' ability to learn.
Researchers were surprised to find, however, that it wasn't just removing the molecules that could make the animals lose the ability to learn ? some peptide was found to inhibit learning.
"We hadn't predicted that we would find both positive and negative regulators from these peptides," Zhang said. "Why does the animal need this bidirectional regulation of learning? One possibility is that learning depends on context. There are certain things you want to learn ? for example, the worms in these experiments wanted to learn that they shouldn't eat this type of infectious bacteria. That's a positive regulation of the learning. But if they needed to eat, even if it is a bad food, to survive, they would need a way to suppress this type of learning."
Even more surprising for Zhang and her colleagues was evidence that the various insulin-like molecules could regulate each other.
"Many animals, including the humans, have multiple insulin-like molecules and it appears that these molecules can act like a network," she said. "Each of them may play a slightly different role in the nervous system, and they function together to coordinate the signaling related to learning and memory. By changing the way the molecules interact, the brain can fine tune learning in a host of different ways."
Going forward, Zhang said she hopes to characterize more of the insulin-like peptides as a way of better understanding how the various molecules interact, and how they act on the neural circuits for learning and memory.
Understanding how such pathways work could one day help in the development of treatment for a host of cognitive disorders, including dementia.
"The signaling pathways for insulin and insulin-like peptides are highly conserved in mammals, including the humans," Zhang said. "There is even some preliminary evidence that insulin treatment, in some cases, can improve cognitive function. That's one reason we believe that if we understand this mechanism, it will help us better understand how insulin pathways are working in the human brain."

World powers wait to hear Iran response to nuclear offer
ALMATY (Reuters) - World powers hope Iran will respond positively on Wednesday to their new offer to lift some sanctions if Tehran scales back nuclear activity the West fears could be used to build bombs.
But any hopes of a significant easing of the deadlock in the decade-old nuclear dispute were dented when Russian media cited a source close to the talks as saying there had been no clear progress in the discussions in Kazakhstan.
"So far there is no particular rapprochement. There is an impression that the atmosphere is not very good," Interfax news agency quoted the source as saying.
The United States, France, Germany, Britain, China and Russia presented the offer when their first meeting with Iran in eight months began in Almaty on Tuesday and the Islamic state was considering it, the powers' spokesman said.
The two sides began a second - and what is expected to be the last in this round of negotiations - day of discussions in the Kazakh city shortly after 11 a.m (0500 GMT) on Wednesday.
Western officials described the first day of the meeting as "useful". Iranian state television described the atmosphere in the discussions as "very serious".
The outcome of the meeting in the Kazakh city will be closely watched in Israel, which has strongly hinted that it could attack Iran's nuclear sites if diplomacy and sanctions fail to stop the uranium enrichment program.
Iran says Israel's assumed nuclear arsenal is the main threat to peace and denies Western allegations it is seeking to develop the capability to make atomic bombs. It says it is only aiming to produce nuclear energy so that it can export more oil.
In their latest attempt to break years of stalemate in the dispute, the powers are offering Iran a relaxation of some of the sanctions that are taking a heavy toll on its economy.
"Hopefully the Iranians will be able to reflect overnight and will come back and view our proposal positively," the spokesman for European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who represents the powers in the talks, said.
"The ball is in their court," Michael Mann added after the first day of discussions on Tuesday.
He did not give details of the offer, but other Western officials have confirmed it includes some limited sanctions easing if Iran closes a underground site where it carries out its most controversial uranium enrichment work.
Diplomats see scant chances of a conclusive deal with Iran before a June presidential election - with the political elite preoccupied with domestic issues - but they hope to hold follow-up talks to the Almaty meeting soon.
IRANIAN COUNTERPROPOSAL
Iran would put forward its own proposal of "the same weight" as that of the other side, a source close to the Iranian negotiating team said on Tuesday, but Western officials said it had not done so during the first day of negotiations.
Iran has shown no sign of willingness to scale back its nuclear work. Its chief negotiator, Saeed Jalili, is close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and is a veteran of Iran's 1980s war against Iraq and the Western powers that backed it.
It argues that has a sovereign right to carry out nuclear enrichment for peaceful energy purposes, and in particular refuses to close its underground Fordow enrichment plant, a condition the powers have set for any sanctions relief.
Tightened Western sanctions on Iran are hurting Iran's economy and slashing oil revenue. Its currency has more than halved in value, which in turn has pushed up inflation.
But analysts say the sanctions are not close to having the crippling effect envisaged by Washington and - so far at least - they have not prompted a change in Iran's nuclear course.
Western officials said the powers' offer would include an easing of restrictions on trade in gold and other precious metals if Tehran closes Fordow.
The Fordow facility is used for enriching uranium to 20 percent fissile purity, a short technical step from weapons grade.
Western diplomats acknowledge an easing of U.S. and EU sanctions on trade in gold represents a relatively modest step. But gold could be used as part of barter transactions that might allow Iran to circumvent financial sanctions.
Iran's foreign ministry spokesman last week dismissed the reported incentive as insufficient and a senior Iranian lawmaker has ruled out closing Fordow, close to the holy city of Qom.
A senior Israeli official said Iran was pressing ahead with its nuclear program while "everyone is talking".
"As of now, the Iranians are thumbing their noses," Sima Shine, head of the Iran desk at the Strategic Affairs Ministry, told Israel's Army Radio. "They are coming to negotiations, speaking hyperbolically, trying to talk about their right to uranium enrichment ... But in parallel they are advancing."

'Maybe thousands' of rats pack 'Hoarding' home

Lunch fully digested? No squeamish kiddies in the room? OK, then you might just be ready to view what's in store on the next episode of "Hoarding: Buried Alive."
From personal tragedies to unfortunate pets to insect overload, viewers have come to expect outrageous scenes on the docuseries, and it doesn't get much more outrageous than the rodent round up in this exclusive sneak peek.
"This house is crawling," a biohazard expert explained after discovering a tremendous amount of rat activity at the show's next locale. "Quantity-wise, there would probably hundreds -- maybe thousands. I personally don't understand how somebody could possibly live like this."
In fact, the owner of the home, Aimee, died just months before her children launched the difficult cleanup effort. The subsequent tour of her property revealed a sofa and bedding largely consumed by rats and a nest of the uninvited guests right behind the toilet.
"Rats are definitely very, very dangerous creatures," the expert warned. "There was a lot of rat droppings and urine throughout their property, so that could possibly cause a health hazard when you're working that kind of environment due to Hantavirus. Hantavirus is caused by rat urine (or) rat feces getting into your lungs, getting into mucus membranes of your nose, and it does cause you to become very ill -- possibly death if it's not treated correctly."

What does The Undertaker's return in Texas mean?
The Deadman rose again in Texas this past weekend.
To the shock of the assembled denizens of the WWE Universe, The Undertaker haunted WWE with his presence for the first time in nearly a year when he made his surprise return to the ring at a WWE Live Event in the Lone Star State. The Phenom?s appearance was somewhat unusual by his standards. He did not lay a solo challenge at the feet of any Superstars, but instead joined forces with former World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus in a tag team bout against Damien Sandow and Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett. It?s safe to say the presence of the former WWE Champion was a welcome sight to the assembled crowd, to say nothing of the outnumbered Sheamus. But The Undertaker?s return, awe-inspiring though it was, has still left the WWE Universe with more questions than answers.
For one, now that The Deadman has staked claim to his ?yard? once again with an appearance in a WWE ring, does that mean he is likely to repeat the feat on Raw anytime soon? The last time Undertaker appeared on WWE television was at Raw 1,000, where he aided his brother Kane in dispatching a squadron of unruly Superstars hell-bent on attacking The Big Red Monster. Triple H promised some months later at the 2012 Slammy Awards that the WWE Universe had not seen the last of The Phenom, and this appearance in Texas fulfilled The King of Kings? prophecy.
But it seems unlikely that this is all The Deadman has in store for the WWE Universe. Granted, a Superstar as mercurial and legendary as The Undertaker certainly has earned the clout to come and go as he pleases, and it is entirely possible that battling Barrett and Sandow was something he?d felt like doing for some time. But the WWE Universe should first remember that WrestleMania season is upon us and no one has yet to come forth to tempt fate by challenging The Undertaker?s 20-0 streak on The Grandest Stage of Them All. By this time last year (and in fact, the year before that), a challenger had already either emerged or been chosen by Undertaker himself. So perhaps The Deadman?s appearance in Texas was not so much an act of camaraderie toward Sheamus as a reminder to everyone else ? from Barrett and Sandow all the way on up to WWE Champion The Rock ? that he is still out there, waiting for a brave soul to step forward and test their worth in the shadow of New York City.
Triple H was right. The Undertaker has returned. For the WWE Universe, it is a blessing. For the WWE locker room, it could be a curse. It is a conundrum. It is a friendly reminder. It is a welcome sight and maybe, just maybe, it is an open challenge. Whether anyone responds appropriately is all that?s left to be seen.

?Let us begin the journey with a tip of the hat to all of the forums that offer strategy discussions, coaching, and training and related videos as well as poker book reviews, general gambling advice, reliable referrals to accounting and legal services etc. All of the sites in our sample are known for these discussions, but for the most part we point the laser beam on participant involvement and commitment to inform, debate, advocate, and challenge poker businesses and poker?poker players.?As one sage poker forum poster quipped, "Beyond the insular community of my poker friends,?I am? caught up in daily discussions?about matters of money, reputation, and stature." And so it is on poker forums!??

The analysis of gossip and news on these forums is variably illuminating,??often transmitted from behind a curtain of hidden identity, rarely mistake-free, and too frequently?presented as gospel?at least until the first vociferous critic takes the stage. But there is no denying that?forums?present myriad opportunities and used artfully have an abundance of merit.

Fujitsu Arrows V F-04E hands-on
Fujitsu had a third set on hand at its booth on opening day here at MWC 2013: the Arrows V F-04E. Launched as part of the NTT DoCoMo's winter lineup, this is the first opportunity we've had to get a hands-on as of course this set will never end up anywhere near our shores. The F-04E is loaded with everything one could expect in a high-end set like a 4.7-inch 720p display -- and it is wondrous to behold -- a 13.1-megapixel camera, 1.5GHz quad-core CPU, integrated 1seg TV antenna and a whopping 64GB of storage.
The Arrows V, aside from the odd obsession Fujitsu seems to have on insisting to hide all its USB ports under tough to open flip up open doors, is a very slick handset. The lines are clean, the display -- did we mention it is lovely? -- clear and easy read from every angle. Sadly for us the booth's requisite bowl of water or fountain was missing in action so we couldn't do a dunk test but we did manage to capture a bit of video and a gallery for you to enjoy.

Intense Texas Blizzard Caught in Videos
Driving snow and gusting winds reduce visibility to next to nothing in two wild videos taken in Amarillo, Tex., during today's historic blizzard.
The storm, which has dumped at least 17 inches (43 centimeters) of snow on Amarillo so far today (Feb. 25), has closed most roads in the Texas panhandle, including the major thoroughfares of Interstates 40 and 27. Around 11 a.m. CST, the Amarillo International Airport recorded a hurricane-force 75-mph gust of wind.
"This is easily in the top three historic snows we've ever had," said Krissy Scotten, the warning coordination meteorologist for the National Weather Service office in Amarillo. "And we've had records since 1892."
Whiteout conditions
Two videos, taken by Scotten and posted on the NWS Amarillo Facebook page, hint at the fury of the blizzard. Blowing snow obscures the parking lot outside the NWS Amarillo office, where drifts of 4 to 5 feet (1.2 to 1.5 meters) were forming, Scotten said. Visibility in the early afternoon remained at a quarter-mile (0.4 km) or less. [See video of the blizzard]
"Travel is pretty much nonexistent in the Texas panhandle right now," Scotten said.
The wind was so strong as Scotten took the videos that the blowing snow stung her face, she said. As of about 1:30 p.m. CST the snow was tapering off, but the winds were still gusting near 50 mph (80 kmh).
"Light to moderate snow will continue for the next several hours, probably three to four hours," Scotten said. "Amarillo could pick up another 2 to 3 inches [5 to 7.6 cm]."
The city averages less than 19 inches (48 cm) of snow a year, making the 17 inches that have already fallen nearly equivalent to an entire year's supply.
Major storm
The blizzard now slamming Amarillo and the Texas panhandle dumped 9 inches (23 cm) of snow in Denver on Sunday (Feb. 24), according to the National Weather Service. The Denver International Airport canceled some 200 flights and delayed hundreds more in response to the snow.
The storm is now expanding toward Kansas and will reach northwestern Missouri by nightfall, according to AccuWeather.com. Oklahoma will also see blizzard conditions.
This is the second blizzard in mere days for the Great Plains. On Feb. 22, a storm dropped snow over the region, crippling travel in Kansas. Russell, Kan., a small town in the central part of the state, saw 22 inches (56 cm) of snow from that snow storm, and the latest blizzard will add to the snow already on the ground. ?

LONDON (AP) ? The Vatican is looking into allegations of "inappropriate behavior" by Cardinal Keith O'Brien, Britain's most senior Catholic cleric, officials said Sunday. The claims came at a sensitive time, as O'Brien and other cardinals prepare for a conclave to choose the next pope.
O'Brien, who heads the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, was taking advice from lawyers after British newspaper The Observer reported that three priests and a former priest have filed complaints to the Vatican alleging that the cardinal approached them in an inappropriate manner.
The paper did not cite the names of the priests, but it said their allegations date back to the 1980s.
"Cardinal O'Brien contests these claims and is taking legal advice," Peter Kearney, a spokesman for the Scottish Catholic Church, said. He declined to comment further.
A Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said the complaints had been channeled through the office of the papal nuncio ? the Vatican's ambassador ? in London. "The pope has been informed, and the question is in his hands," Lombardi said.
In the coming weeks, O'Brien, 74, is expected to join a conclave of cardinals at the Vatican to elect the next pontiff, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Benedict announced earlier this month that he will step down on Thursday ? the first pope to resign in some 600 years.
O'Brien has not been the only cardinal to become embroiled in negative news as the papal election approaches. Across the Atlantic, thousands of people have signed a petition to keep California Cardinal Roger Mahony from the conclave because of revelations he had shielded sexually abusive priests.
Mahony has made it clear he will attend the gathering and that no one can force him to recuse himself.
In comments on the papacy made to the BBC on Friday, O'Brien said the next pope would be free to consider changing church policy on issues that were not "basic dogmatic beliefs." He said he believed that the requirement for priestly celibacy is not "of divine origin" and could be reconsidered.
O'Brien also said it was time to think seriously about having a pope from outside Europe. He said he would be "open to a pope from anywhere if I thought it was the right man, whether it was Europe or Asia or Africa or wherever."
The cardinal is due to retire when he turns 75 in March.

TERRE HAUTE, Indiana ? A chilly breeze rumpled the ribbon a bit as a new wind turbine was dedicated on Indiana State University grounds.
ISU welcomed "Helix" home Friday afternoon, amid windy weather many joked was quite appropriate. Painted Sycamore blue, the turbine stands about 30 feet off the ground and is powered by curved, vertical blades. Rotating by wind power, the blades are expected to help generate between 5,000 and 11,000 kilowatts annually to offset the university's energy usage.
ISU President Dan Bradley commented on the sustained effort of all involved.
"It's great to finally have this day," he told The Tribune Star (http://bit.ly/Xsu7zk).
Situated between Rhoads and Mills Residence Halls, the turbine was officially named "Helix" through a campus contest which drew more than 200 submissions. Sophomore Brett Ferry offered the successful name, it was announced at the contest.
Bradley said the idea for a campus wind turbine grew out of the university's strategic plan as part of the Unbounded Possibilities Initiative and its offshoot, the Institute for Community Sustainability. The turbine coincides with the university's Climate Action Plan, which seeks to make the campus carbon-neutral by 2050.
Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said ISU remains a community leader in the effort toward sustainability. Meanwhile, the aesthetic quality of the turbine is also a plus.
"It looks great. It looks like a piece of art," he said.
More than 450 environmental sciences students actively participated in the project, analyzing wind data to determine the best location for a turbine.
Sabrina Brown, a student involved in the project, reported that she's presented her climatological research at a national conference and has been asked to publish a paper about her findings.
Brown said students caught the wind in anemometers to measure speed at 50 points across campus. Student data collected as early as the 1960s was also utilized in the research, she said.
"To me, the coolest part of the project was that students were able to participate from beginning to end," she said.

20 Islamists killed in Mali battle, troops wounded
PARIS (AFP) - Between 15 and 20 Islamists were killed in fighting in the northern Mali town of Gao which also left two French soldiers and four Malian troops wounded, France's defence ministry said Friday.
The battle on Thursday saw Islamists briefly occupying the city's courthouse and the city hall before French-backed troops repelled the attackers.

Vermont hospital forced to cut jobs
At 19 beds, Grace Cottage Hospital is Vermont's smallest, and Andrea Seaton knows it's hurting.?
The vice president of development said the hospital is cutting 10 percent of its 154-member staff, across eight departments.
Seaton said the decision was not easy, but said the economy? and recent federal policies have left them no choice.
"With the economy trying to bend the cost curve, with the Affordable Care Act, we have to look at all of our costs," said Seaton.
Most patients at Grace Cottage are on Medicare and have been referred to the hospital's rehabilitation unit. Their rehab offers treatment for each patient twice a day, seven days a week. Seaton said that kind of care comes with a price tag and because of costs, they have seen a decrease in referrals.
"Most of our patients are on Medicare and those costs are allocated for a procedure from when they enter a hospital until they leave the hospital. So our referring hospitals are looking carefully at our costs as well," she said.
According to the Vermont Hospital Association, all of Vermont's hospital lose money on Medicare and Medicaid.
"The federal government has significant debt and deficit and they're looking to limit their financial liability around Medicare," said Bea Grause, president of the Vermont Hospital Association.
Grace Cottage is also paying $600,000 in a new provider tax and another million in free care for the uninsured, the highest they've ever paid.
"Times change, and you have to adapt to those changes," said Seaton.

Community attitutes towards domestic violence need to change ...
OPINION: Ingrid Lester and Lisa Keem.
Two beautiful? women, one a pretty blonde and the other an attractive brunette, and it took their deaths for us to know tragic journeys, to learn their names.
Here in Australia, domestic violence cases are mostly conducted in closed court, where the media is not invited.
The worst atrocities can be dealt with there and the public will never know, as it cannot be reported by the media.
Even when domestic violence is reported in open court, we can't name the perpetrators.
We don't disclose the names because we want to protect women from the stigma of being a domestic violence victim.
That is until the unthinkable happens.
The very person who was meant to love and protect these women the most becomes the one they have to fear, to run from.
But no matter how far they go to get away, sometimes it isn't enough.
The first time we hear their names is when they are found dead.
In Lisa Keem's case, she was missing at first.
That was before her burnt body was found in northern New South Wales.
While the exact details of her last hours may never be known, her ex-husband Richard Giardina was convicted of her murder.
It is believed he killed her in the office of her Point Vernon home.
Ingrid was found dead in her home at Urraween.
She had been stabbed 43 times by Michael Kinsella, who had been promised $10,000 by her ex-husband Jim Lester to do the grisly deed.
I re-read her mother's book recounting her daughter's tragic tale through tears after my colleague Clementine Norton wrote an opinion piece about violence against women last week.
Ligita Sternberg wrote To the Bitter End, which chronicles the life of her daughter, with the help of Margaret Marlow.
How I wish we could have shared that story when Ingrid was still alive.
I wish everyone could see the photos of her when she was 18, in her wedding dress, exchanging vows with the man who would eventually hire someone to kill her.
I wish people could see how truly beautiful she was.
And Lisa Keem; in the months before she died she spoke to Chroincle journalists who did a story with her about her new pet grooming business.
She was in a high-powered position in Sydney but moved to Hervey Bay to slow things down, have a change of pace.
She told one of our journalists that life was too short to be always wearing a suit.
Not long after that, the life of this vibrant young woman, whose new business had just been celebrated in the pages of the newspaper, became front page news for all the wrong reasons.
While they both sought to live independently from their abusive husbands, it is clear neither of the women were able to live free of the fear of violence.
In the months leading up to her death, Ingrid had heard rumours about her husband trying to pay someone to kill her.
Her mother told her to come stay with her for a while, but Ingrid chose to try to remain independent.
Many people will say that was the wrong choice.
I think it was an incredibly brave choice.
Lisa also couldn't shake the fear of her ex-husband.
The day before she was murdered, she told her mother, Rosie Foster, who gave birth to Lisa when she was 16, that she had read her stars and they had predicted "an old flame" would turn up.
Her mother told the Courier Mail how scared her daughter was of the man who would become her murderer.
But she too had asserted her independence.
Perhaps that was what angered these men the most.
It's the reasons these cases must remain behind closed doors that has to change - the shame and burden of being named a domestic violence victim and the judgement that goes with a decision to remain in a violent relationship - the lack of support and help for a woman that wants to break free.
And let's not forget that both Lisa Keem and Ingrid Lester had left their husbands when the ultimate violence was done to them.
I wish that we could open the doors wide open instead of closing them from public view.
But unfortunately the attitudes of society still have to change tremendously before that will ever be an option.
I feel there is little genuine sympathy in the wider community for women who find themselves in violent relationships.
We talk the big talk about White Ribbon Day and ending the cycle of violence, but at the end of the day it's all too easy to turn the other cheek and pretend it's someone else's problem.
Unfortunately, doing just that means there will be many more names and stories that we will never get to know until it is too late.

Georgia, Texas execute inmates for 1990s' murders

AUSTIN, Texas/ATLANTA (Reuters) - A man convicted of killing his former girlfriend by dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire was put to death by lethal injection in Texas on Thursday, the state's first execution of the year.
In Georgia, a man convicted of fatally shooting two university students in 1995 was executed after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his last-minute appeal.
Carl Henry Blue, 48, was pronounced dead at 6:56 p.m. local time at the state penitentiary at Huntsville, said the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Blue was convicted of killing ex-girlfriend Carmen Richards-Sanders, 38, in her apartment in Bryan, Texas, in 1994 as she was getting ready to leave for work. His execution was the second in the country this year. Texas leads the United States in total executions.
According to court records, Blue threw open the door to Richards-Sanders' apartment, tossed gasoline on her and another man who was in the home at the time and set the two of them ablaze with a lighter.
"I told you I was gonna get you," Blue said to Richards-Sanders, according to a court summary of the case.
The male victim survived his injuries, but Richards-Sanders died 19 days later due to organ failure caused by burns over 40 percent of her body.
After turning himself in to the police, Blue said the incident was a prank and that he had not intended to kill his ex-girlfriend, said the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
In the Georgia case, attorneys for Andrew Allen Cook, 38, had argued the state's method of lethal injection violated state and federal law. The execution was delayed by four hours as the U.S. high court considered the appeal.
Cook was convicted of killing Mercer University students Michele Lee Cartagena, 19, and Grant Patrick Hendrickson, 22, as they sat in a parked car next to a lake near Macon, according to court records. Cook fired 14 shots at the couple with an AR-15 rifle and five shots from a 9-millimeter Ruger handgun.
"The murders were completely random," according to court records. "Cook did not know the victims, and there was no interaction between Cook and the victims before he killed them."
After Cook became a suspect, investigators enlisted the help of his father, a veteran FBI agent, to help track him down. Cook admitted the killings to his father, who testified against his son at trial.

Apple iPhone 5 Outsold Samsung Galaxy S3 In Q4 Of 2012

The Apple iPhone 5 is the king of the hill when it comes to smartphone sales. The fourth quarter numbers from 2012 are in, and the iPhone 5 was the clear winner in sales, beating out the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Apple?s victory comes despite a new ad campaign by Samsung that directly pitted the S3 against the iPhone 5 at the end of last year. Dazeinfo reports that the news for Apple is actually better than simply a win for the iPhone 5.
A financial report by Strategy Analytics shows that the Samsung Galaxy S3 actually finished third in sales behind both the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4s.
Valuewalk reported that the iPhone 5 sold 27.4 million handsets in the fourth quarter of 2012, while the iPhone 4S sold 17.4 million. The numbers also show that Apple?s unit sales are going up.
The iPhone 5 unit sales increased from 6 million in the third quarter of 2012 (the quarter it was introduced) to 27.4 million units in the fourth quarter.
The Apple iPhone 4S didn?t see growth quite like that, but unit sales went from 16.2 million in Q3 to 17.4 in Q4. Conversely, Samsung actually saw its unit sales slip from the third to the fourth quarter of 2012.
The Samsung Galaxy S3 slipped from 18 million units sold in the third quarter to 15.4 million units in the fourth quarter of 2012. These sales numbers drastically affected the marketshares for both Apple and Samsung.
At the end of the third quarter, Samsung held 10.4 percent of the market while the iPhone 4S had 9.4 percent and the iPhone 5 had a paltry 3.5 percent (for a combined 12.9 percent of the market for Apple).
At the end of the fourth quarter, Samsung?s marketshare had fallen to 7.1 percent. Both the iPhone 4s (8 percent) and the iPhone 5 (12.6 percent) beat that number individually and combined to give Apple more than 20 percent of the market.
Samsung does have a return volley in the works with the impending release of the Galaxy S4. Will the Apple iPhone 5 be able to stay on top once Samsung?s new phone is released?

News Summary: Cyberspying offers rich payoff
RICH PAYOFF: For state-backed cyberspies such as the Chinese military unit implicated by a U.S. security firm in a computer crime wave, hacking foreign companies can produce high-value secrets. Information stolen by hackers could be worth millions of dollars to China's industry, helping speed the rise of giant state-owned companies seen as national champions.
THE ACCUSATION: A report by U.S. firm Mandiant found attacks on 141 entities, in the United States and other countries. Attackers stole information about pricing, contract negotiations, manufacturing, product testing and corporate acquisitions

NEW YORK (AP) ? Talk of more deal-making sent the stock market higher Tuesday, putting the Dow Jones industrial average within close reach of its all-time high.
Reports that retailers Office Depot and OfficeMax are discussing a merger came after big corporate deals for Heinz and Dell were announced in recent weeks. Some investors are betting that more deals could be on the way as buyers pay premium prices for publicly traded companies.
The Dow rose 53.91 points to close at 14,035.67. All it would take now is one good day to push the average above 14,164, the record high reached in October 2007.
"It seems that investors are more comfortable with taking risk right now," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at BMO Private Bank in Chicago. That's despite the $1.2 trillion in automatic federal spending cuts that are scheduled to start March 1 unless Congress and the White House find a way to avoid them. Congress returns from vacation next week.
Previous budget battles in Washington have rattled financial markets. But this time out, many investors seem unfazed by the prospect that Congress won't stop the "sequester" from kicking in. One reason is that the cuts are spread across the board for a decade, instead of all at once.
"I think investors are actually comforted by it," Ablin said. "It's not ideal. But if Congress can't do it when left to their own devices, this is the next best thing."
In other trading Tuesday, the Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.15 points to 1,530.94. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 21.56 points to 3,213.59. Google crossed $800 for the first time.
The gains were widely shared, if slight. Nine of the 10 industry groups tracked by the Standard & Poor's 500 index inched higher, led by energy companies. More than two stocks rose for every one that fell on the New York Stock Exchange.
Markets were also higher in Europe following news that the German economy is picking up steam. Indexes rose more than 1 percent in Germany and France.
Stocks of office supplies stores jumped following a report in The Wall Street Journal that OfficeMax and Office Depot were considering a deal to merge. The paper said an announcement could come as early as this week.
OfficeMax soared $2.25 to an even $13, a gain of 21 percent, and Office Depot shot up 43 cents to $5.02, a gain of 9 percent. Staples also rose as investors anticipated that more mergers could be on the way.
Analysts cautioned that antitrust regulators could block mergers in the office-supply business. Staples, for instance, tried to buy Office Depot in 1997, but was stopped by the Federal Trade Commission.
Health insurers fell after the release of preliminary government data that suggests rate cuts to Medicare Advantage plans for next year will be steeper than anticipated.
The two largest Medicare Advantage providers, Humana and UnitedHealth, sank. Humana had the biggest loss in the S&P 500, dropping 6 percent, or $4.98, to $73.01. UnitedHealth fell 66 cents to $56.66.
The government says it expects costs per person for Medicare Advantage plans to fall more than 2 percent in 2014. The government uses this figure as a benchmark to determine payments for these privately run versions of the government's health care program for the elderly and disabled.
In the market for U.S. government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.03 percent from 2 percent late Friday.
