It is a very nice looking calculator app. Its buttons, design and coloring give Llumino a look all its own. Is that enough to pay $1.99 for a new calculator app? Many would say no, but those who value style and design might find an app worth adding to their collection here.

Dentist?s patients line up for HIV, hepatitis tests

>>> there is a health scare we're following tonight that involves thousands of people who may have been put at risk simply by going to the dentist. hundreds of them lined up in tulsa , oklahoma, today to be tested for hepatitis and hiv, after visiting an oral surgeon accused of unsanitary practices. nbc's charles hadlock is in tulsa tonight with more for us. charles ?

>> reporter: good evening, lester. today was the first day that patients who may have been exposed to infectious diseases at a local dentist's office could come and get tested. 400 people showed up today, but there are thousands more who may have been infected. the line at the tulsa county health department stretched out the door today. hundreds of people who have one thing in common, all were patients of dr. scott harrington , whose dental practice is now at the center of a health scare.

>> i figure i better get tested and be safe. it's the smartest thing to do.

>> reporter: state health officials said harrington 's clinic may have been the source of hepatitis in at least one patient, and fear there could be more. they've notified 7,000 patients who may have been exposed to hepatitis on hiv.

>> we are here for the long run. we know that it's going to take a couple weeks, to months, to get everyone screened. and so we are here and we'll have this clinic established here until we see the last person.

>> reporter: in a 17-count complaint, the state board of dentistry accuses dr. harrington of being a menace to public health because of unsanitary practices found in his office. inspectors say harrington 's clinic had rusty equipment, allowed dental assistants to perform surgery without a license. harrington 's staff improperly sterilized tools with bleach which caused them to corrode. harrington has surrendered his dental license and is cooperating with authorities.

>> i just have been tested for hepatitis c .

>> reporter: back at the long line at the clinic, melinda harris waits for the results of her tests.

>> i'm really scared, because i feel like that's my had fiance right there. if anything happens, you know, it's not good news, that he's going to have to be tested.

How to Survive the Year of the Hack

Fear Factor: Medium. A lot of different levels of hackers use the link-doom method, from those creeps trying to take over unsuspecting women's webcams to the secret unit apparently linked to the People's Liberation Army?in China, which reportedly used very well concealed spear-phishing to get high level people inside various media outlets to download malware and use it for the purposes of international espionage at that drab looking building over there. For the average Twitter user, though, there are various ways to avoid downloading malware, even spear-phishing, which does a very good job at looking legitimate. But basically, don't click things that look fishy (or phishy), don't visit suspect forums, and don't buy suspect things. And make sure your computer's anti-malware program, scripts, and browsers are up to date.

RELATED: Anonymous Knocks Australian Spy Site Offline in Digital Protest

Facebook & Apple and the Trendy 'Watering Hole' Method

What It Looks Like:?This is another, more clandestine way to get people to download malware, and that was likely the type of hack (probably from China) that infiltrated the internal servers at?Facebook, Apple, and possibly Twitter, as the companies reported, like dominoes, in February. This type of hack doesn't target an individual but a website that many individuals visit ? you know, like when the people visit the watering hole. When trying to target Facebook's developers, for example, hackers planted "malicious code injected into the HTML of the site used an exploit in Oracle's Java plug-in," as AllThingsD's Mike Isaac explained.?

Fear Factor: High.?Once you visit an infected site, well, that's pretty much the end of the attack. That's the thing that trips up a lot of people writing about and spreading fears around hacking, and the Facebooks and Twitters of the world are pretty good at protecting their accounts when they get played. But if you're looking for a solution,?a lot of people have suggested that getting rid of Java might help your situation, since a lot of malware exploits that code deployment platform. Then again, it might not really be that easy, since the malware spreads so fast and to such large sites.?

North Korea & Iran and the DDoS Attack?

What It Looks Like:?Denial-of-service attacks have received a lot of attention this week because of the fight between Spamhaus and Cyberbunker, which resulted in the biggest ever DDoS attack ever. These rapid-fire attacks, which infect computers with malware to overwhelm and then shut down websites, were also responsible for the big bank attacks over the last few months, including Thursday's AmEx breach, which likely came from an Iranian hacker group called the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Cyber Fighters. That South Korean hack the other day from North Korea?was also likely of the DDoS variety. And denials of service are getting more powerful. The AmEx hack, for example, infected "infected powerful, commercial data centers with sophisticated malware and directed them to simultaneously fire at each bank, giving them the horsepower to inflict a huge attack," as The New York Times's Nicole Perlroth and David Sanger explain.

Fear Factor: Very High.?While some have accused the Times of being sensationalist with its use of "cyber warfare," the DDoS attacks have become more and more powerful, which is cause for concern. There are ways to close certain holes on the web's DNS servers that could ease the flood of relatively tame denial-of-service attacks, but when it comes to national security the U.S. is no match for China's hackers, who are trying to take down some of America's most crucial infrastructure. President Obama acknowledged the threat in his State of the Union address and recently met with major business leaders about cyber attacks. In addition to clandestine efforts to fight back against China's cyber fighters, though, the White House is now looking at something like sanctions: The latest government funding bill would make it harder for Chinese companies to sell tech products to a few federal agencies, according to Politico, although that's only minorly comforting. But Obama has ordered cyber attacks on Iran, after the famous Stuxnet worm targeted U.S. computer infrastructure.

Aaron Swartz, Matthew Keys & Weev and "Unauthorized Access"

What It Looks Like: Nothing like a vague legal term to get the people talking. "Unauthorized access" can blanket pretty much any computer related crime, as federal investigators have made blatantly clear in the high-profile cases of three men facing lots of prison time for not a lot of hacking. In theory, "unauthorized access" means getting into a person or an organization's computer even though you're not supposed to ? even though that's pretty much the point of hacking. But the term has been used very differently in accusing each of the three men: Swartz literally went inside an MIT server room?and assigned himself IP addresses, Keys gave up some access to the content management system of the Los Angeles Times website, and it's not even clear what Weev accessed without authority. Many, many people, from inside the hacking community and out, have accused the government of using the "unauthorized access" charge to prove a point.

Fear Factor: Low. The scary part is how vague the definition of a not scary hacking act has become. Authorities and bigger organizations and businesses tend to fear these kinds of attacks more than individuals, because it's usually the individuals (or Anonymous) use the highly illegal tactics to make often mundane points of their own.?

...and Physical Cable Hacks

What It Looks Like: Forget cyber hacks, people are still hacking actual Internet cable lines! In an attempt to take an entire continent offline, three scuba diving hackers have now gone straight to the source and literally cut the chords in Egypt.?

Fear Factor: Medium. It's definitely the most effective way to take out an entire country or continent's Internet. But, it's pretty conspicuous and not very precise. You've got to be a pretty smart underwater hacker to be an effective one.

There are certainly other types of "hacks" out there, but this should help clarify things the next time you're facing three frightening headlines about technology in one newspaper. China isn't coming after your Netflix account. But you should still probably?dump that stupid password,?beef up your email and computer security, and avoid the MIT server room. And the North Koreans. Those guys are up to no good.

Rogue Dentist May Have Exposed 7,000 Patients to HIV, Hepatitis

The Tulsa Health Department is warning 7,000 patients of a local dentist's office that they could have contracted HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C from poor sterilization practices.

Dr. Wayne Harrington, an oral surgeon with a practice in Tulsa, Okla., is being investigated by the state dental board, the state bureau of narcotics and the federal Drug Enforcement Agency because one of his patients recently tested positive for hepatitis C and HIV without known risk factors other than receiving dental treatment.

Upon hearing of the infected patient, the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry conducted a surprise inspection of Harrington's practice on March 18, allegedly finding numerous problems, including regular use of a rusty set of instruments on patients with known infections, and the practice of pouring bleach on wounds until they "turned white."

Calls to Harrington's office were directed to an operator, who told ABC News the clinic no longer took voicemails. The operator said patients were being referred to another clinic, but did not disclose the clinic's name.

Susan Rogers, executive director of Oklahoma's Board of Dentistry, called the incident a "perfect storm." On top of his many violations in sanitary practice, the dentist was a Medicaid provider, which means he had a high proportion of patients with HIV or hepatitis, she said.

Harrington and his staff told investigators that he treated a "high population of known infectious disease carrier patients," according to a complaint filed by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry.

He allegedly allowed unlicensed dental assistants to administer medication, according to the complaint. These assistants were left to decide which medications to administer, and how much was appropriate.

Drug cabinets were unlocked and unsupervised during the day, and Harrington did not keep an inventory log of drugs, some of which were controlled substances. One drug vial expired in 1993.

"During the inspections, Dr. Harrington referred to his staff regarding all sterilization and drug procedures in his office," the complaint read. "He advised, 'They take care of that. I don't.'"

Harrington allegedly re-used needles, contaminating drugs with potentially harmful bacteria and trace amounts of other drugs, according to the complaint. Although patient-specific drug records indicated that they were using morphine in 2012, no morphine had been ordered since 2009.

The instruments for infected patients was given an extra dip in bleach in addition to normal cleaning methods, but they had red-brown rust spots, indicating that they were "porous and cannot be properly sterilized," according to the complaint.

The Tulsa Health Department said Harrington's patients will receive letters by mail notifying them of the risk and steps to obtain free-of-charge testing.

While 7,000 patients may have been exposed, Joseph Perz, an epidemiologist with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said it's "extremely rare" to see dental transmission of HIV and hepatitis B or C. In July 2012, 8,000 Coloradans were notified that their dentist had reused needles, potentially exposing them to the blood-borne viruses. But not a single case was identified, according to the CDC.

Dental transmission is not impossible, however. Perz cited a dental fair three years ago in which hepatitis B was transmitted between patients.

In July 2012, more than 1,800 veterans who received dental care at a St. Louis VA Medical Center were warned that improper cleaning of dental tools may have exposed them to HIV and hepatitis.

The Tulsa Health Department has set up a hotline at (918) 595-4500 for people with questions.

ABC News' Dr. Richard Besser and Katie Moisse contributed to this story.

EPA further limits sulfur. Will higher gas prices follow?

The Environmental Protection Agency announced new standards on sulfur in gasoline Friday that many say will lead eventually to a hike in gas prices. The EPA expects a 1 cent per gallon increase; industry says it will be much more.

By David J. Unger,?Correspondent / March 29, 2013

Gasoline drips off a nozzle during refueling at a gas station in Altadena, Calif. A new rule from the EPA would reduce the amount of sulfur allowed in gasoline from 30 parts per million to 10 parts per million in 2017.

The federal government proposed new standards Friday that further limit the amount of sulfur in gasoline. Compared with previous reductions, Friday's proposal is slight. But many say it's enough to increase the price Americans pay at the pump.

Why It Matters

Energy: New regulations translate to a gradual increase in gas prices.

Environment: Less sulfur means lower pollution and reduced health costs associated with poor air quality.

Myanmar president, in first remarks on religious riots, says force could be used to end unrest

YANGON, Myanmar - Myanmar President Thein Sein has said his government will use force if necessary to quell deadly religious rioting affecting several towns since last week.

In his first public comments on the violence, Thein Sein warned in a televised speech Thursday that he would make all legal efforts to stop political opportunists and religious extremists trying to sow hatred between faiths.

The recent religious unrest began March 20 with rioting by Buddhists targeting minority Muslims in the central city of Meikhtila that left at least 40 people dead and drove about 12,000 from their homes. The unrest spread this week to several towns about 160 kilometres (100 miles) north of the country's biggest city, Yangon.

Halloween social of horror as vicious, unprovoked attack on stranger ...

Halloween pumpkin FILER lantern
A Halloween pumpkin. (QMI Agency files)

Report an error

What was supposed to be a lighthearted Halloween social spent with friends turned into a terrifying ordeal for a Winnipeg man after he was attacked by a total stranger, spent days in a coma and needed months off work to recover.

Prosecutors are now seeking a three-year prison term for Leigh James Bryant, 25, who admitted Thursday he was responsible for lashing out and pummelling the victim, possibly believing he was being mocked over a drink-spilling mishap.

Bryant pleaded guilty to a single charge of aggravated assault in the Court of Queen?s Bench stemming from the Oct. 30, 2010 incident.

Bryant and the victim separately attended a weekend costume-party social at the Travelodge Winnipeg East hotel on Alpine Avenue.

Bryant purchased a number of shots and was trying to navigate a crowded area with the drinks on a tray near where the victim ? dressed as a ?rescued Chilean miner? in honour of the internationally-acclaimed rescue mission ? was standing nearby with friends, Crown attorney Scott Cooper said.

Somebody, but not the victim, bumped Bryant and his shooters tumbled, drawing his ire. When he looked up, he saw the victim laughing, Cooper said. However, evidence showed he just happened to be laughing while talking with someone else, said Cooper.

?Whether Mr. Bryant took that as laughing at the fact that he dropped the drinks or not is not entirely clear ? however, what Mr. Bryant did is approach (the victim) and punched him once in the face,? the Crown attorney said.

The punch caused the innocent partygoer to tumble backwards down a small flight of stairs. Bryant hit him again as it happened and the victim bashed his head on the floor.

As he lay out cold, Bryant slipped on his rubber party mask and fled out an exit door. The victim spent five days in a coma, suffered a brain bleed and it was feared he?d suffered a permanent brain injury.

After extensive rehabilitation, including speech therapy, the victim regained his health.

?Luckily he made a full recovery through significant efforts of his own,? said Cooper.

Medical reports will be tabled when the case returns to court in June.

Defence lawyer Eric Wach will request a two-year sentence for Bryant, court was told. No information was provided Thursday about Bryant?s background or personal circumstances.

North Korea is no 'paper tiger', warns US official as regime puts rockets on standby

The threats to the U.S. are becoming more strident as North Korea's leader, Kim Jung Un, says his rockets are ready to strike America at any time. But experts do not believe Pyongyang has the capabilities it claims.

By Courtney Kube and Ian Johnston, NBC News

North Korea put its rocket units on standby Friday to attack U.S. military bases in South Korea and the Pacific, after repeated threats and one day after two American stealth bombers flew over the Korean Peninsula in a military exercise.

A U.S. official warned that the isolated communist state is ?not a paper tiger? and its reaction should not be dismissed as ?pure bluster.?

According to the North Korea's official KCNA news agency, the country's leader Kim Jong Un ?judged the time has come to settle accounts with the U.S. imperialists in view of the prevailing situation? at a midnight meeting of top generals, Reuters reported.

The latest threat comes one day after?two nuclear-capable stealth bombers flew from Missouri?to drop inert munitions on a range in South Korea as part of a major military exercise.

KCNA via EPA

Kim Jong Un, seen at what was described as an urgent meeting overnight, has ordered his rocket forces to be on standby to strike U.S. and South Korean targets at any time.

The U.S. official emphasized the danger posed by North Korea?s military and the unpredictable nature of its 30-year-old leader.

?North Korea is not a paper tiger so it wouldn't be smart to dismiss its provocative behavior as pure bluster. What's not clear right now is how much risk Kim Jong Un is willing to run to show the world and domestic elites that he's a tough guy,? said the official, who asked not to be named. ?His inexperience is certain -- his wisdom is still very much in question.?

There was a mass demonstration in support of Kim?involving tens of thousands of people?in the main square of North Korean capital Pyongyang Friday, The Associated Press reported.

Placards read "Let's crush the puppet traitor group" and "Let's rip the puppet traitors to death!"

'War for national liberation'
The state-controlled KCNA also published an article that said the ?opportunity for peacefully settling the DPRK-U.S. relations is no longer available as the U.S. opted for staking its fate. Consequently, there remains only the settlement of accounts by a physical means.? DPRK stands for Democratic People?s Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

David Guttenfelder / AP

As chief Asia photographer for the Associated Press, David Guttenfelder has had unprecedented access to communist North Korea. Here's a rare look at daily life in the secretive country.

?A battle to be fought by the DPRK against the U.S. will become a war for national liberation to defend the sovereignty and dignity of the country and, at the same time, a revolutionary war to defend the human cause of independence and the justice of the international community,? the article by ?news analyst? Minju Joson said.

South Korea?s Yonhap news agency quoted a South Korean military official as saying that there had been ?increased movement of vehicles and forces? at missile launch sites in the North. ?We are closely watching possibilities of missile launches,? the unnamed official said.

North Korea routinely issues hostile statements but analysts have noted recent remarks have become more belligerent. In December, the North carried out a long-range rocket test and then detonated a nuclear bomb in a test earlier this year.

North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-un has issued almost daily threats, including the threat of nuclear strikes on Washington, D.C., and Seoul. In addition, Pyongyang has put its troops on combat readiness, warning that war "may break out at any moment." NBC's Ian Williams reports.

At a daily news briefing Friday, China?s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hong Lei said China was calling for an easing of tensions.

But some fear the situation could be getting out of control.

"It seems that Kim Jong Un is in the driving seat of a train that has been taken on a joyride," Lee Min-yong, an expert on North Korea at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, told Reuters.

Russia, meanwhile, appeared to criticize the U.S. over Thursday's bomber mission.

"We are concerned that alongside the adequate, collective reaction of the U.N. Security Council, unilateral action is being taken around North Korea that is increasing military activity," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told reporters in Moscow, according to Reuters.

"The situation could simply get out of control; it is slipping toward the spiral of a vicious cycle," he said.

Reuters contributed to this report.

On-the-lam killer nabbed near LA's Skid Row after 1,800-mile trip

AP

Keana Barnes, who was serving a 25-year sentence for manslaughter, escaped from a Louisiana prison but has now been recaptured in Los Angeles. This photo was released Jan. 4, 2013, by the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

By Samantha Tata, NBCLosAngeles.com

LOS ANGELES -- A nationwide search for a convicted killer ended in Los Angeles when police spotted a fugitive who has been on the lam for months after escaping prison in Louisiana, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Keana Barnes broke out of the Louisiana Correctional Institute for Women in January. She was arrested on Monday?near Skid Row, some 1,800 miles west of the prison where she was being held.

The U.S. Marshals Service added Barnes to the agency's?15 Most Wanted list 11 days before she was captured. Barnes initially refused to give the officers her name, but ultimately confessed her identity.

Prison officials discovered the window was broken in Barnes? cell. She was serving a 25-year sentence after being convicted of two counts of manslaughter in 2002, U.S. Marshals officials said.

More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

Authorities said Barnes? ?extremely violent criminal history? dates back to 1999. She has prior convictions of aggravated assault, battery, theft and manslaughter.

In 2002, Barnes fatally stabbed one victim 17 times, U.S. Marshals officials said.

While awaiting the outcome of her murder trial, Barnes allegedly shot and killed a man while he slept in 2003, authorities said.

'Avengers: Endless Wartime': Marvel's new graphic novel era begins ...

Marvel will start a new shelf of original graphic novels this October with the release of?Avengers: Endless Wartime, a 110-page epic by writer Warren Ellis and artist Mark McKone that will represent a number of milestone firsts.

Endless Wartime?will be the first Marvel title released simultaneously in North America, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, Brazil, Finland and Turkey. The book includes a code for accessing a digital edition?via the Marvel Comics app and online in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop.?The book?s biggest distinction, however, is the somewhat odd fact that Marvel rarely publishes major original graphic novels ? more on that in a moment. But first a quick observation on Ellis: The man who dreamed up Spider Jerusalem and Planetary?is putting together a pretty special year.

The Brit?s second prose detective novel,?Gun Machine, hit the New York Times Bestseller list in January and his comics work will echo in two major studio releases this summer. There?s?Iron Man 3?(which draws core concepts and themes from?Iron Man: Extremis, the landmark 2005 story arc that pruned and primed the character?s mythology for Hollywood) and then?RED 2?(the sequel to 2010?s?RED,?which gets its spy-versus-spy-retiree concept and its title from the old Wildstorm limited series by Ellis and Cully Hamner).

I spoke to Ellis by transatlantic call about?Endless Warfare, which began as a business tactic (Marvel ordered up a book that might catch the curious eye of moviegoers, which is why the graphic novel is described as a ?movie-length epic? by its publisher and features four Avengers from the 2012 hit film: Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and Hawkeye) and the wily Ellis was smart enough to add the one visual effect that Marvel Studios can?t match on the screen ? the sight of Wolverine standing next to Thor or Iron Man. The line-up is rounded out by Captain Marvel? a name that leads me back to the rarity factor represented by the Endless Warfare.

The term ?Marvel Graphic Novel? became a boutique brand after The Death of Captain Marvel, but if you hand a copy of that trailblazing April 1982 release to a contemporary reader they would say it looks more like a collector?s edition issue of magazine than a graphic novel.

If you go by a purist definition of ?graphic novel,? there haven?t been all that many published by Marvel, which instead churns out?trade paperbacks?that conveniently compile recent multi-issue story arcs or recycle the company?s vintage classics with yet another unexpected repackaging theme (which is why the Fantastic Four now rival the Beach Boys for compilation overkill). Avengers: Endless Warfare joins a short but illustrious stack of lengthy original stories presented in a unified form that includes peers like the The Silver Surfer, the 114-page cosmic novel from 1978 that marked the return of Jack Kirby to Marvel Comics.

That?s important to Ellis, who is coming up on his silver anniversary as a published writer and now looks to comics more for offbeat challenges than routine opportunities.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: I don?t know much more than the title, so forgive the vague question: When you think about this new project, what aspect has you the most excited?
WARREN ELLIS:
They haven?t actually told me what I can tell you so, um, let me feel my way through this. The main reason I took it is this will be the first of Marvel?s graphic novel line. Really, it?s the first time they?ve done original graphic novels of this scale. You remember the old Marvel graphic novel line from the ?80s?

Oh yes. I distinctly remember buying The Death of Captain Marvel the day it came out.
Sure, and there were some fun books but they were short. They were largely 48- or 64-page stories, I want to say. And this one is 110. It?s much more in the mode of what we think of now as a graphic novel. This will be the first one of this new [publishing initiative] and that is what attracted me to do it in the first place.

It would seem to fit your writing style. There?s a sense of scale in your work and, more than that, you?re storytelling doesn?t seem as hurried or breathless as lots of comics.
[Laughs] Probably it depends on the form I?m writing in, because I?ve done a lot of done-in-one stuff as well. But of course, coming out the back of Gun Machine and being in the middle of a new novel right now, I?m very much in the novelistic mode. It?s nice to be able to do something in comics without having to watch the 22-page count. It?s not often I?ve done anything in comics where I wasn?t watching that count and trying to find the break for the end of the issues. I?ve done a few mini-series where I decided I just wasn?t going to pay that much attention to the break. But it?s very nice to do a comic of this size where you don?t really have to keep an eye on where you?re going to find the natural breaks.

On that topic of craft and just overall writing approach: What is a thing you would like to improve on at this stage of your career as far as the writing life? Is it a craft thing, a motivation thing? Maybe something about lifestyle or creating new patterns in your work? What is your artistic challenge?
Getting out of bed before noon. [Laughs] It?s an interesting question because it is the kind of thing that comes to you when you?re living in the second act of your career. I get to, in large part, to pick and choose what I?m going to do. And I look for things. So something like [Avengers XX], there is something of a technical challenge to get something that feels like a graphic novel out of these characters and that genre and trying to get a new sound out of it. That?s only part of what I?m doing right now. I?m testing myself in novels and I?m thinking about doing more comics work that would probably not be like a lot of the stuff I?ve done in previous years. So [the challenge]? Looking for the new things.

A huge difference between your novelist work and your comics work is collaboration; comics are an artist?s medium as surely as film is a director?s medium. That can be tricky. Do you consider yourself a natural collaborator?
It?s always an awkward area to question with the company-owned stuff because it does tend to get very separated out. I can be collaborative, for instance, in situations where I go and study the artist?s work before I start writing. Then I can at least try to write towards their style. At the top of the page I give them my email address and say,? For God?s sake, if something doesn?t work let me know.? So it?s not a classical collaboration. I?m the one starting off with a blank page but I?m not cutoff from the rest of the process; if something isn?t working for an artist they can come back to me. A big part of my job is make them look good because if the artist looks good than I look great.

When it comes to the voices of characters, do you find it a challenge to keep those voices different and distinct? And which is more difficult, finding characters that sound authentically different when they speak or getting in the head of characters who think differently than you yourself?
It?s a case of finding the characters, who they are, where they come from and what they want. That?s how I try to keep the voices straight. If I can keep those things in mind ? and it?s particularly hard with a job like this one because you are juggling seven characters ? but if you keep all of that in mind when they start to speak, you?re normally able to approximate the voices you should have. It?s always difficult with the superhero stuff because you?re working with?characters who have been written by 100 to 200 people over the past 20 years, at least, so they never sound the same or act the same. The best approach is to try to draw the best fitting line through all of the interpretations. And then find a note that sounds right to your ear.

Of the seven characters you have in this band of heroes ? is there one you have a special affinity for? Or one that irks you?
I largely got to choose the cast, but a big impetus to launching this line with these characters was largely commercial. Let?s be blunt. There?s a Thor movie and a Captain America movie coming up. So at the top of the process there was a request from the office that those two characters be front and center or at least have them be fairly integral to the plot. The rest of them I got to pick and choose, which is why the Captain Marvel character is in there, because she?s written by a friend of mine and I quite like her.. .I put Wolverine into the cast because that?s nothing you?ll see in the Avengers film, well not for 10 years at least.

(AP) ? Mortar shells crashed into an outdoor cafe at Damascus University on Thursday, killing at least 10 students in the deadliest of a rising number of mortar attacks in the heart of the Syrian capital.

The strikes have escalated as rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad try to enter the city, terrifying civilians whose support the opposition needs to advance its cause.

It was unclear who fired the rounds. The government blamed "terrorists," its blanket term for those fighting Assad's regime. Anti-regime activists accused the regime of staging the attack to turn civilians against the rebels.

Mortar strikes on Damascus are relatively new in Syria's crisis, which began in March 2011 with protests calling for Assad's ouster, then evolved into a civil war. The U.N. says more than 70,000 have been killed in the conflict.

Since last month, mortar shells have hit previously safe parts of the capital with increasing frequency. The near-daily strikes have frightened residents, and many have begun to avoid open areas and put plastic on their windows to help block flying glass from an explosion or shrapnel.

Some shells appear aimed at government targets, such as one of Assad's palaces and the general command of the Syrian army. Others have hit near civilian targets, including the Sheraton Hotel and a soccer stadium, both on the city's west side. Mortar shells also have struck in areas to the east, like the Christian neighborhood of Bab Touma.

Thursday's strike was the deadliest yet.

State-run Al-Ikhbariya TV showed video of the university cafe where blood pooled on tiles and plastic chairs and pens and eyeglasses littered the area. Later video showed people being treated in a hospital, including a woman with white bandages around her head and a man whose back was peppered with shrapnel wounds.

The dining facility belongs to the Faculty of Architecture in Damascus's central Baramkeh district.

State TV said 15 people were killed in the strike, but the official news agency, SANA, put the death toll at 10 and said dozens were wounded. It also reported three other mortar strikes nearby.

The opposition activist group, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, put the death toll at 13.

Similar mortar attacks on Tuesday killed at least three people and wounded dozens. Six people were killed by mortar shells in different parts of the city on March 11.

"No one anywhere in the world can imagine a more criminal act than this," SANA quoted Amer al-Mardini, the president of the university, as saying. He said he hoped the wounded would heal quickly and "resume their studies as soon as possible."

Anti-regime activists accused the regime of launching the attack to tarnish the opposition's image.

Elizabeth O'Bagy, who studies the Syrian rebels at the Institute for the Study of War, said it was not possible to determine who was behind the attack, but it appeared to fit the regime's pattern of escalation. In other aspects of the war, such as the use of airstrikes or Scud missiles, the regime has gone from trying to target rebels to more indiscriminate attacks on civilians, she said.

"Because of the fact that it does follow regime behavior, it is more likely to be a regime attack," she said, while acknowledging it could also have been a rebel misfire.

Rebels have established footholds in a number of Damascus suburbs but have only been able to push into limited areas in the south and northeast parts of the capital. The government has retained its grip of downtown Damascus, although the mortar strikes have deepened fear among many residents that they will soon see the violence that has damaged many other Syrian cities.

Thursday was not the first time Syria's universities have been targeted. On Jan. 15, twin blasts hit Aleppo University, killing more than 80 people. The opposition said the regime had bombed the university, while the government accused rebels of striking it with rockets.

Also Thursday, Ghassan Hitto, the newly elected prime minister of the main opposition bloc, said he was reviewing candidates for a planned rebel interim government. It will be a service-oriented administration with nine to 12 ministries and will be based inside Syria, Hitto said during a meeting with Syrian expats in Qatar.

Syria's conflict threatens to destabilize neighboring countries, where more than 1 million refugees have fled to escape the violence.

In Jordan, on Syria's southern border, a riot broke out Thursday in a refugee camp after Jordanian authorities refused to let buses full of refugees return to Syria because of violence over the border. U.N. refugee liaison Ali Bibi said it was unclear how many refugees were involved in the melee at the Zaatari camp, but no one was injured.

To the north, Turkey denied reports that it was deporting hundreds of Syrian refugees for rioting on Wednesday in a camp in Akcakale after a fire killed a 7-year-old child. A camp official said local authorities identified 300 people involved in the uprising and prepared to deport them, but the government stopped them.

A Foreign Ministry official said 100 refugees asked to leave the camp and return to Syria on their own.

The U.N. refugee agency did not confirm the reports, but said it was concerned about possible deportations of refugees.

In Israel, on Syria's southeastern border, the military said it was beefing up medical teams along the border because of several cases of wounded Syrians crossing the frontier for medical care. Eleven Syrians have been treated in Israeli hospitals, including one who died from his wounds on Wednesday, a military official said. Others returned home after their conditions improved.

All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

T-Mobile says its iPhone 5 has HSPA+ on AWS bands, HD Voice

TMobile John Legere

We all know the iPhone is at last reaching T-Mobile -- but what you might not know is that it won't just be a one-for-one port of the existing hardware. Carrier CEO John Legere just stated that the T-Mobile iPhone 5 will support HSPA+ on AWS bands (1,700MHz and 2,100MHz) in addition to ready-made LTE support. If you wander outside of an LTE coverage area, you'll still have up to 42Mbps data on Magenta's network. There's more: it'll also support the same HD Voice calling that went nationwide in January.

Gene therapy may aid failing hearts

Mar. 25, 2013 ? In an animal study, researchers at the University of Washington show that it was possible to use gene therapy to boost heart muscle function. The finding suggests that it might be possible to use this approach to treat patients whose hearts have been weakened by heart attacks and other heart conditions.

Led by University of Washington (UW) Professor and Vice Chair of Bioengineering Michael Regnier and Dr. Chuck Murry, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Biology and co-director of the Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine at UW, the study appears online today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Normally, muscle contraction is powered by a molecule, the nucleotide called Adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP). Other naturally occurring nucleotides can also power muscle contraction, but, in most cases, they have proven to be less effective than ATP.

In an earlier study of isolated muscle, however, Regnier, Murry and colleagues had found that one naturally occurring molecule, called 2 deoxy-ATP (dATP), was actually more effective than ATP in powering muscle contraction, increasing both the speed and force of the contraction, at least over the short-term.

In the new PNAS study, the researchers wanted to see whether this effect could be sustained. To do this, they used genetic engineering to create a strain of mice whose cells produced higher-than-normal levels of an enzyme called Ribonucleotide Reductase, which converts the precursor of ATP, adenosine-5'-diphosphate or ADP, to dADP, which, in turn, is rapidly converted to dATP.

"This fundamental discovery, that dATP can act as a 'super-fuel' for the contractile machinery of the heart, or myofilaments, opens up the possibility to treat a variety of heart failure conditions," Regnier said. "An exciting aspect of this study and our ongoing work is that a relatively small increase in dATP in the heart cells has a big effect on heart performance."

The researchers found that increased production of the enzyme Ribonucleotide Reductase increased the concentration of dATP within heart cells approximately tenfold, and even though this level was still less than one to two percent of the cell's total pool of ATP, the increase led to a sustained improvement in heart muscle function, with the genetically engineered hearts contracting more quickly and with greater force.

"It looks as though we may have stumbled on an important pathway that nature uses to regulate heart contractility," Murry added. "The same pathway that heart cells use to make the building blocks for DNA during embryonic growth makes dATP to supercharge contraction when the adult heart is mechanically stressed."

Importantly, the elevated dATP effect was achieved without imposing additional metabolic demands on the cells, suggesting the modification would not harm the cell's functioning over the long-term.

The finding, the authors write, suggest that treatments that elevate dATP levels in heart cells may prove to be an effective treatment for heart failure.

Flannery O'Connor: 10 quotes on her birthday

Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) examined life through the lens of her Roman Catholic faith ? she never tried to hide it, and in fact emphasized her strong viewpoint through her fiction. She made a serious name for Christian fiction and for women writers through her strong prose. ?As a Southern writer a lot of her work was grotesque, dealing with the freakish in human nature. She once wrote: "Whenever I'm asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize one." Samsung announced its latest flagship phone, the Galaxy S 4 earlier this month in New York.

Critics have been going wild because the Galaxy S 4 is real competition to Apple?s iPhone 5.

The Galaxy S 4 is packed with the latest hardware and software features like a 13 megapixel camera, eye tracking technology, and even a way to use the phone without touching the screen.

While the iPhone 5 is still an impressive smartphone, it doesn?t hold a candle to the Galaxy S 4.

New lung cancer study takes page from Google's playbook

Mar. 25, 2013 ? The same sort of mathematical model used to predict which websites people are most apt to visit is now showing promise in helping map how lung cancer spreads in the human body, according to a new study published in the journal Cancer Research.

A team of researchers used an algorithm similar to the Google PageRank and to the Viterbi Algorithm for digital communication to analyze the spread patterns of lung cancer. The team includes experts from the University of Southern California (USC), Scripps Clinic, The Scripps Research Institute, University of California, San Diego Moores Cancer Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York.

"This research demonstrates how similar the Internet is to a living organism," said USC Viterbi School of Engineering Professor Paul Newton, Ph.D., the lead and corresponding author of the study. "The same types of tools that help us understand the spread of information through the web can help us understand the spread of cancer through the human body."

Employing a sophisticated system of mathematical equations known as a Markov chain model, the research team -- guided by USC applied mathematicians- found that metastatic lung cancer does not progress in a single direction from primary tumor site to distant locations, which has been the traditional medical view. Instead, they found that cancer cell movement around the body likely occurs in more than one direction at a time.

Researchers also learned that the first site to which the cells spread plays a key role in the progression of the disease. The study showed that some parts of the body serve as "sponges" that are relatively unlikely to further spread lung cancer cells to other areas of the body. The study identified other areas as "spreaders" for lung cancer cells.

The study revealed that for lung cancer, the main spreaders are the adrenal gland and kidney, whereas the main sponges are the regional lymph nodes, liver and bone.

The study applied the advanced math model to data from human autopsy reports of 163 lung cancer patients in the New England area, from 1914 to 1943. This time period was targeted because it predates the use of radiation and chemotherapy, providing researchers a clear view of how cancer progresses if left untreated. Among the 163 patients, researchers charted the advancement patterns of 619 different metastases to 27 distinct body sites.

The study's findings could potentially impact clinical care by helping guide physicians to targeted treatment options, designed to curtail the spread of lung cancer. For example, if the cancer is found to have moved to a known spreader location, imaging tests and interventions can be quickly considered for focused treatment before the cells may be more widely dispersed. Further study is needed in this area.

Keeping tabs on cancer's movement in the body is vital to patient care. While a primary cancer tumor (confined to a single location) is often not fatal, a patient's prognosis can worsen if the cancer metastasizes -- that is, flakes off and travels to other parts of the body to form new tumors.

The study is part of a relatively new movement to involve physical sciences in oncology research. Mathematics probability models that interpret data from specific patient populations offer a new alternative to the established approach of relying on broader clinical trends to predict where, and how fast, cancer will spread.

Egypt's president warns may move to protect nation

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's president delivered a stern warning to his opponents on Sunday, saying he may be close to taking unspecified measures to "protect this nation" two days after supporters of his Muslim Brotherhood and opposition protesters fought street battles in the worst bout of political violence in three months.

Nearly 200 people were injured in Friday's violence, some seriously, outside the headquarters of the Brotherhood, Egypt's dominant political group.

"If I have to do what is necessary to protect this nation I will, and I am afraid that I may be close to doing so," a visibly angry Morsi said in an animated speech to the opening session of a conference on women's rights.

"I will do so very, very soon. Sooner than those trying to shake the image of this nation think," said the Islamist leader who took office in June as the country's first freely elected president.

"Let us not be dragged into an area where I will take a harsh decision," he warned.

While not naming any one opposition group or critic in particular, his comments were the strongest hint to date that he believes the parties and politicians grouped in the National Salvation Front, the main opposition coalition, were directly behind the violence.

His comments were initially released in a series of tweets on his account but state television later aired extensive excerpts from the address.

He also warned that "appropriate measures" would be taken against politicians found to be behind Friday's violence, regardless of their seniority. Anyone found to be using the media to "incite violence" will also be held accountable, he added. His comments came just hours after dozens of Islamists staged a protest outside studios belonging to independent TV networks that are critical of the Egyptian leader.

The Islamists are protesting what they see as the biased coverage of Friday's clashes. The Brotherhood says it does not support the protest, but some of the protesters were chanting slogans in support of Brotherhood leader Mohammed Badie.

Friday's clashes followed an assault a week earlier by Brotherhood supporters on protesters painting derogatory graffiti outside the group's headquarters. The protesters chanted hostile slogans and taunted Brotherhood supporters when some of them tried to stop demonstrators from posting flyers on the headquarters' outside walls.

The Brotherhood supporters also assaulted reporters at the scene. The group later said its supporters were provoked by the protesters who scribbled profanities on the headquarters' outside walls and that the reporters were part of the protest.

Morsi's comments made no direct mention of the clashes but appeared to be a possible prelude to measures against the mostly liberal and secular opposition.

"I call on all political forces not to provide a political cover for violence, rioting and attacks on private and public property," Morsi said. "I will not be happy if investigations find some politicians guilty."

The National Salvation Front said in a statement it did not condone violence and called for an independent probe into all incidents of violence. Noting that the presidency, the government and the Brotherhood were making "fierce attacks" on the media, blaming it for inciting the violence, which it said was rather the result of failed promises of inclusiveness by Morsi and his group. It contends that the Brotherhood aims to monopolize power and control the state.

Only "drastic political solutions and genuine national participation" will save Egypt from the cycle of violence, it added.

The latest bout of political violence was the worst seen in Egypt since at least 10 people died in clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi in Cairo in December. Images of bloodied men from the two sides, burning buses and rows of black-clad riot police were splashed across the front pages of Egypt's newspapers on Sunday and Saturday, giving the distinct impression of a nation torn by strife.

Violence and a quick succession of political crises are deepening the schism in Egypt between Morsi and his Islamist supporters on one hand, and moderate Muslims, secular and leftist Egyptians along with Christians and women on the other. The seemingly endless political unrest in the eight months since Morsi took office, coupled with a free falling economy and tenuous security situation, have led some commentators and politicians to warn of civil war if nothing is done soon. Morsi however on Sunday dismissed the prospect of the "collapse" of Egypt as a false notion entertained by his foes.

He also repeated earlier claims that the political violence was engineered by remnants of the Hosni Mubarak regime, toppled in a popular uprising two years ago, and fueled by outside powers he did not identify. He also claimed that paid thugs were behind the violence, not genuine protesters.

"No one in our neighborhood wants this nation to stand on its feet. I will cut off any finger that meddles in Egypt," he said alluding to alleged foreign interference. "I can see two or three fingers that are meddling inside," he said without elaborating.

Morsi also sought to debunk an often repeated charge that he places the interests of the Brotherhood ahead of those of the nation and that he is only the president of the "Brothers."

"I never was and I never will be," he said in response to those charges. Ruthlessly ridiculed in the independent media, Morsi said he did not mind criticism of his person. "But I will not allow it when criticizing the president of the republic is designed to undermine the nation."

Midwest sees spring transform into winter weather

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Few signs of spring are being found in parts of the Midwest as a snowstorm tracks mostly along Interstate 70, bringing heavy snow and high winds.

The National Weather Service said parts of Colorado and northwest Kansas saw 10 to 15 inches of snow Saturday, and southwestern Nebraska had up to 7 inches.

The system moves east Sunday. A winter storm warning has been issued for much of central Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

Five to 10 inches of snow is forecast along a line from Kansas City to St. Louis. Central Illinois and Indiana could see up to 10 inches overnight and into Monday morning.

But the system didn't affect the NCAA men's basketball championships in Kansas City. North Carolina coach Roy Williams said it was "no distraction."
