The city of Los Angeles has formally notified the United States Olympic Committee of its intent to bid for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Not lost on anyone is the timing: The 2024 Games would be the 40th anniversary of the 1984 L.A. Olympics, which are considered by many as the most financially successful modern Olympics.
Last year, the USOC sent a letter to the mayors of 35 large U.S. cities to solicit their interest in being considered as the official U.S. candidate for the 2024 Games.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa sent a reply along with a 2012 L.A. City Council resolution in support of a 2024 bid.
Villaraigosa's letter was also signed by various community leaders like AEG President and CEO Tim Leiweke, Walt Disney Company Chairman and CEO Robert Iger, Mattel Inc. Chairman and CEO Bryan Stockton, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce chairman Alan Rothenberg, Dodgers co-owner and former Lakers great Earvin "Magic" Johnson and actor Tom Hanks.
