London Olympics 2012: Rebecca Adlington has to settle for bronze

So the nation's sweetheart was not, this time, to get her fairytale ending. Rebecca Adlington secured for Britain its first medal of the pool, but for a nation greedy for gold, it was the wrong colour.

The defending Olympic champion ? whose twin victories in Beijing made her one of the superstars of London 2012 years before it actually took place ? could manage only bronze in the 400m freestyle, despite enormous roars of support that at felt at times that they might lift the temporary wings of the Aquatic Centre.

Adlington was not the favourite at her less favoured distance, and the race was to be won by the woman with the fastest time this year to her name.

France's Camille Muffat broke the Olympic record to win in 4min 1.45sec, narrowly beating Allison Schmitt into silver. Adlington, in sixth at the halfway mark, had to battle heroically in the final 100 metres to pull herself back to bronze.

But if four years of expectation may have lent the result a tinge of disappointment for some, Adlington insisted that she herself was delighted.

"We can only do our best and that's what I did tonight and that's why I'm pleased with a bronze. I'm happy to say I'm third in the world, it's unbelievable."

Those who had anticipated an easy victory had always been mistaken, she said. "Going in to that, I didn't expect ever to get a gold medal, it was never an expectation of mine, that was other people's. Your own goals are very different to what other people want to set for you.

"Everyone has been just saying to me, 'Hey are you going to get a gold?', like I'm just going to pick up my drink and it's so easy."

In the moments after stepping from the pool she was close to tears, she admitted, at the response from the audience, who in contrast to earlier scenes in the Aquatic Centre packed almost every seat, and roared to a deafening crescendo as the race progressed.

"The crowd, oh my God, was unbelieveable," she said, adding that in the last 100 metres of the race their cheers "inspired me, encouraged me, gave me that little bit extra."

Her bid had very nearly ended in disaster earlier in the day when, like Michael Phelps 24 hours previously, she only narrowly managed to squeak into the final in eighth place. Though she dominated her own heat, two extremely fast races that followed came close to edging her out of the final, and meant she was forced to seek to defend her title ? a feat no British swimmer has ever achieved ? from lane eight.

Adlington has swum well in outside lanes before ? she won silver at last year's world championships in Shanghai from lane one, after finishing seventh in the heats, and the year before won bronze from an outside lane.

But, away from the frenzied competitiveness of the centre lanes, where Schmitt stayed on the Frenchwoman's shoulder throughout the race, it was a lonely battle.

"I couldn't see much," she said. "To be honest I didn't have a clue where I was coming. I just had to swim my own race. I just put my head down and went for it.

Adlington had swum the second fastest time this year at 400m, but her favoured distance has always been the 800m freestyle, and Sunday's result will increase inevitably the pressure on her when she comes to contest that race on 3 August.

"The 800 is going to be a completely different race," she said. "It's my favourite event, it's always going to be the event I'm drawn to."

For the 23-year-old from Mansfield, the race was the culmination of a remarkable journey from the night at Beijing's Water Cube when she burst spectacularly into the national consciousness.

An overnight media darling who saw the Mansfield pool in which she had trained as a child promptly renamed in her honour, Adlington has admitted that her newfound celebrity status was a distraction.

Her form slumped after the last Games, and in her favoured distance of 800m she came 4th in the 2009 world championships, and a disappointing 7th at the European championships the following year. She has battled back to impressive form, however, and as world champion and world record holder at the 800m distance, she will start that race the clear favourite for gold, having swum the two fastest times this year.

Arriving, at last, at the Games had left her "so emotional" before the race, she said. "I think the whole event, the whole being here, overwhelms you at once. It's only sunk in today that I'm actually at the London Olympics. It's going to be an emotional week."

Elsewhere in the pool, American Ryan Lochte saw his dream of winning seven swimming golds crumble when the US 4x 100m freestyle team were narrowly beaten at the death by France.

The result gave team-mate and rival Michael Phelps his first medal of the Games and his 17th overall, but for Lochte, who beat Phelps in the 400m individual medley race on Saturday, the best he can now hope for is a modest six golds.

Earlier Briton Ellen Gandy finished in last place in the 100m butterfly final, in a race that saw American Dana Vollmer break the world record.

It was Gandy's first Olympic final, and there was little expectation that she would challenge for medals with the 200m her favoured event.

Gandy, too, paid tribute to the "amazing" crowd.

"I was the first swimmer out and it was so loud. You can also hear them on the second 50 which is unusual."

Vollmer's world record was the second of the meet after Ye Shiwen lowered the women's 400m individual medley on Saturday with a final 50m quicker than Ryan Lochte, winner of the men's equivalent.

South Africa's Cameron Van der Burgh also broke the world record in the men's 100m breastroke, finishing in 58.46.

Did you watch the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony on Friday night?

I was chatting to Chelsea (my life-partner) about it this morning and we both noted how fun it was to experience the richness of British culture watching the Queen, Mr. Bean and James Bond during the opening ceremony?

Ever noticed how when you visit some countries, you feel pulled into a magical reality, rich with meaning?

?while other countries have cultures that feel flat, repressed or shallow?

You may not have thought about it, but your relationship also has a culture?

The two of you give off a ?vibe? that others can pick up on. And because you spend so much time with your chosen mate, the culture in your relationship will largely determine how your life turns out, so this is an important distinction.

Having said that, the question that begs is:

Is the culture in your relationship one that feels welcoming, exciting, and warm with the intimacy that comes from being fully known and deeply seen by your lover?

OR

?is the culture of your relationship one that feels heavy, cold and unsafe, where you both tiptoe around on eggshells to avoid provoking each other?

Which more accurately describes your relationship?

You most likely relate to both, depending on where you are in your lives together.

At one point, the culture in Chelsea and my relationship was like the culture of a war torn country ? cold, hard and deserted. It seemed like every communication turned into a fight ? every bid for love was seen as an attack.

I had to do something, because despite all my communication skills learned as an internationally acclaimed speaker and trainer, I still could not accomplish the simple task of getting the woman that I loved to respond to me.

The highest leverage point for creating
a ?culture of intimacy? in your relationship?

The culture in your relationship is determined by your ability to communicate with your partner in a way that resolves conflict and creates intimacy.

Of course, this skill was never taught to us as we were growing up, so most of us feel emotionally shipwrecked when conflict arises during the Power Struggle stage of our relationship.

I know I did.

I discovered that the communication skills required to get me into a relationship were very different from those required to get me through the Power Struggle stage of a relationship.

So I began devouring every book and course I could find on communication and conflict resolution? And in the process, Chelsea and I learned a new set of communication skills that saved our relationship.

A pleasant side-effect of using these skills has been that we?ve created a culture of acceptance, unconditional love and mutual respect in our relationship, without actually setting out specifically to do so.

Learn a powerful ?culture creation? tool

Factors To Consider In Las Vegas Limo Rentals | alwaysmadeup.com

People seek the services of limos for numerous reasons. Some hire them for parties, weddings, graduation balls and prom or just to get a sense of extravagance and fun. But, searching for great Las Vegas limo rentals is not as simple as searching your yellow pages and getting ads.

Here are some of the several things well worth looking into when considering Las Vegas limo rentals.

* Reputation ? This is an element that will make or break a firm. You could try asking around town and find out if anyone else had the satisfaction of hiring a particular firm. Most likely you will find a few people who recognize the company that you?re selecting and can give you several insights if the rental service is bad or good.

Another wise decision would be to go online and look for evaluations. These days, the majority of rental firms possesses their own web sites and has their names in many internet classified ads. You can try searching for evaluations from other previous clients o

Cancer claims Taunton bride weeks after dream wedding

TAUNTON, Mass. -

Just weeks after getting the wedding she had long wished for, Taunton resident Liznay Ramos died at home surrounded by family and friends after a four-year struggle with cancer.

Born and raised in Ponce, Puerto Rico, Ramos was a skilled chef and a mother of one who hoped to one day open her own restaurant, her husband told the Taunton Daily Gazette. She was 31.

?She wasn?t ready to go,? said her husband, Taunton native Norberto Ramos. ?She had a lot of plans. She was nice and caring. She was very outgoing. You don?t expect her to go so fast. She was a very family-oriented person. She was always worried about her family and about everyone else. She was always trying to make sure everyone?s else?s life was in line. She was always calling them every day.?

Ramos was the subject of a feature in the Taunton Daily Gazette in early June, talking about her wedding that was made possible through the nonprofit Wish Upon a Wedding.

The June 6 wedding at the Villa in East Bridgewater cost about $15,000, all covered by donations from a network of local businesses, coordinated by Wish Upon A Wedding.

Ramos died as a result of cervical cancer on July 12. She is survived by her husband, two-year-old son Dylan Ramos, parents Jose Humbert and Carmen Rodriguez, and a brother, David Rodriguez.

Constant medical bills prevented Ramos and her husband from being able to hold the wedding they wanted for the last two years, until a about five months ago when volunteers from Wish Upon a Wedding approached her.

?Her passing is extremely sad,? said Julia Barnes, volunteer coordinator for Wish Upon a Wedding Boston and nurse trainer at Morton Hospital. ?She loved her wedding and said she was very, very happy. ... We gave pride in giving her what she wanted in her wedding, and are very proud of that. We can look back at that and smile.?

Barnes said she remembers Ramos for her positive attitude and her compassion for others despite the seriousness of her own illness, which spread to her lungs and thigh.

THE DAY'S ACTION

So, two more swimming world records were broken on Sunday and Spain's highly favored football team tumbled out of medal contention after losing to Honduras.

American Dana Vollmer won the 100 butterfly in a world record and was followed by Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa, who set a world mark to win the 100-meter breaststroke.

The biggest surprise of the day came from France's 4x100-meter freestyle relay team, which upset the favored United States and Australia.

GATES HERE

AP's Steve Wade saw Bill Gates as he slipped into the table tennis venue to watch Ariel Hsing. "I'm wishing her good luck but she has a really great opponent," said Gates. "She's done very well to get this far."

He asked if Gates had ever won a point off Hsing. "Not legitimately. She beat me when she was 9, easily. She has been nice to me in social situations."

TWITTER TRASH TALK

Hope Solo's angry Twitter rants are U.S. coach Pia Sundhage's latest challenge.

The U.S. women's soccer team won 3-0 Saturday against Colombia, but Solo, the U.S. goalie, took exception on Twitter to comments by her former colleague Brandi Chastain, who is now a TV commentator.

"The game has changed from a decade ago," Solo tweeted.

Sundhage says she spoke with Solo and reminded her that the most important thing now is the team's next Olympic game against North Korea on Tuesday. But the coach says she's not going to bother stopping her star goalie from tweeting.

"It's all about the next game," Sundhage said.

LOW EXPECTATIONS

British swimmer Rebecca Adlington was probably the most surprised by her bronze medal swim in the 400 meters final.

Still, many seats in the lower level remain unaccounted for.

EYEING THE ODDS

Determined to see a British sports book, I discovered William Hill in Euston. It's nothing like Las Vegas.

Think more like an empty OTB. One television showed the Olympics. The rest were airing dog racing.

But the variety was interesting. They've got bundled bets such as Usain Bolt winning the 100 and 200 meters and the U.S.A men and women's basketball teams both winning gold at 9-to-4. A soccer bet at 8-to-1 bundles the Brazilian men and the American women to win the gold.

The overwhelming favorite is David Rudisha of Kenya in the 800 meters at 1-to-12. The next closest is the American women's basketball team at 1-to-10.

For a big payoff, go for the "Olympic Football Yes/No." Pick all six correctly, including if all six substitutes will be used in the Britain vs. Cameroon women's soccer match, and it pays 33-to-1.

BRITS AND HOOPS

Football's the undisputed king of sports in Britain. But basketball is capturing the imagination here at the Olympics.

After being disappointed in the road race on Saturday, Britons flocked to the basketball arena for their team's hoops opener against Russia.

The upper level is jammed, the Union Jack is flying proudly and the crowd is roaring at every basket by Luol Deng or Joel Freeland.

They were at the center of the Olympics opening ceremony's tribute to Britain's cherished National Health Service.

Now the 320 beds that director Danny Boyle had in a dance sequence that showed British nurses tending to sick children will be used in real hospitals in Tunisia.

Organizers said the beds' elaborate lighting effects and wiring were being removed by volunteers before they were to be loaded into shipping containers and sent overseas.

The beds are being sent to the Hospital Habis Burguiba De Medenine and the Hospital de Taouine in Tunisia.

So far Chinese basketball star Yi Jianlian has had difficulty finding playing time in the NBA.

That may change. After scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 rebounds Sunday in a loss to a Spanish team full of NBA players, Chinese coach Bob Donewald says he has no idea why his best player can't get minutes stateside.

BROKEN JAW (AND DREAMS)

Ghana's flagbearer is out of the Olympics after failing to recover in time from a broken jaw sustained in a qualifying fight.

Maxwell Amponsah had surgery to reset his jaw following the fracture on May 5 but it hasn't fully healed, meaning he carried his country's flag at Friday's opening ceremony but won't get to compete.

But Kobe's still the top Olympian on the social media site in terms of overall numbers.

Facebook has released the following overall fan figures:

LONELY SEATS

The rows of empty seats at some Olympic venues have enraged sports fans in London who tried but failed to get Olympic tickets.

And now the seats are putting their side of the story across ? through Twitter, naturally.

An account, (at)Olympic seat, emerged on Sunday evening.

"I feel so empty," read one post, accompanied by an avatar of empty seats.

"It was my lifelong ambition to be an Olympic seat," read another tweet. "To provide rest and comfort for cheering sports fans. I feel like such a failure."

BELLE OF THE BAR

The Americans dominated the afternoon qualifying for women's gymnastics, but Britain's athletes got the loudest cheers.

An ovation greeted Britain's Beth Tweddle, who earned a 16.133 on the uneven bars for the top score of the session.

"I was nervous," she admitted later. "It was nerve-wracking to do the bars last."

Tweddle, at 27, is the oldest member of the team and Britain's most decorated gymnast. She's never won an Olympic medal, however.

Her performance Sunday helped Britain make the team finals, four years after they missed the last slot at the Beijing Games.

"We know we're not going to be able to touch USA, Russia, China," Tweddle said. "We are the level below them. Four years ago, we wouldn't be looking at that, so we are getting better."

IT'S OKAY, ROOMIE

Jordyn Wieber has released a statement of support for close friend Aly Raisman, who bumped her out of the all-around gymnastics finals.

Wieber, the reigning world champion, had to watch Raisman's performance knowing a strong showing would keep her out of the individual competition. She left the arena sobbing after missing the cut.

"It was hard because of course I wanted that spot. But I also wanted Aly to do her best for the team," she said.

The two are roommates here at the London Games. Wieber will be relegated to cheerleader now as Gabby Douglas and Raisman compete for the all-around title.

"It has always been a dream of mine to compete in the all-around final of the Olympics," she said. "I'm proud of Aly and Gabby and happy that they reached the all-around and I was able to help the team get to the Finals. It was always going to be close between the three of us doing all-around and in the end it is what it is."

Haiku Real Estate Market Midyear Update ? Maui Real Estate Team ...

In the second installment of our mid-year Maui market updates, we decided to take a look at the North Shore community of Haiku. Haiku is a rural community situated to the East of Paia. It is a geographically expansive area in the windward area of Maui. The community is favored for its natural tropical beauty, property with acreage, peace and quiet, proximity to wind and wave sports and accessibility to Central Maui. Here are the real estate sales numbers for the first half of 2012 and the first half of 2011 for context. The numbers are followed by a few thoughts on the Haiku real estate market and it?s prospects for the second half of 2012.

A comparison of Haiku home and land sales volumes for the first six months of 2011 and 2012

The chart above compares Haiku Real Estate Sales Volumes for homes and land in the first six months of 2011 and 2012

There were 33 homes sold in Haiku during the first six months of 2012 at a median price of $620,000. By comparison, there were 22 homes sold in the first half of 2011 at a median price of $673,000. That calculates to a 50% increase in sales volume and an 8% decrease in median price. There were 12 Haiku Land Sales for the first half of 2012 with a median price of $393,750. There were 5 land sales during the first half of 2011 at a median price of $300,000. That is a 140% increase in sales volume and a 31% increase in median prices.

Here are a few other numbers worth noting from the first six month of Haiku Real Estate sales:

  • The high sale in the first of 2012 for Haiku was $1,900,000. This property is a 3,800 square foot, ocean view, luxury home on just over two acres. It has a pool and a detached ohana. During the same period last year, Haiku?s top sale was $1,150,000. This home is a 1,700 square foot high quality finish home home with detached cottage on almost three and a half acres.
  • The low sale for the first half of 2012 was $256,000. This property is a modest off the grid cottage on around a third of an acre. The low for the first half of 2011 was $236,000. That home is a small Bali kit house on just under a tenth of an acre.
  • There were five homes sold over $1,000,000 during the first half of 2012. There were also five homes sold over $1,000,000 during the first six months of 2011.
  • Three of the properties that closed in the first half of 2012 were bank owned properties. There were also three successful short sale transactions. By comparison, there were two short sales during the first half of 2012 and no REO closes.
  • The high sale for land in the first half of 2012 was $854,000 for 14 acres at the edge of the rainforest in upper Haiku. The high sale for the first half of 2011 was $900,000 for 38.49 acres with preliminary approval for a six lot subdivision.

Compared to last year, there has been a distinct uptick in activity in the Haiku Real Estate market. Sales volumes have increased significantly with a 50% increase in volume for homes and a 140% increase for land. Values are a little more muddled. While the median for homes was down 8%, it can be argued that the composition of sales is driving medians just as much as changes in values. The same can be said for land values where the 31% increase in medians is by no means a true reflection of changes in property values. Our feeling is that home values may be down a little in the Haiku market, but we are close to some sort of bottom. Whether that bottom is definitive or not depends in part on the overall global economic picture. Land prices are mixed. There haven?t been as many bottom dollar land sales opportunities that we saw a year or two ago, but the overall trajectory seems lower.

The big question is what can we expect for the rest of 2012? There are 49 active homes for sale in Haiku with 27 homes pending. Of the active homes, 25 homes are listed over $1,000,000. That is over half the inventory. That includes 13 homes over $2,000,000 and 7 homes over $3,000,000. If you are looking at the high end of the market, there appears to be a fair amount of inventory and a smaller pool of potential buyers. Keep in mind that there were only five home sales above $1,000,000 and none above $2,000,000 in the first six months of the year.

The lower the price range, the more scarce the inventory becomes within the Haiku Real Estate market. There are only six homes active under the median sales price of $673,000. That limited inventory may well constrain sales volumes. It may or may not have an impact on values. Scarcity will often drive prices up. It remains to be seen if that will happen with lower priced Haiku homes. We have seen some signs that buyers are opting to remain patient vs. stretching or reaching on prices. Buyers are holding out for quality and value. It will be interesting to see if we see any bumps in inventory. It has been surmised that we may see an increase in bank owned inventory at some point this summer. We haven?t seen any clear signs of that yet.

On the land front, there are 41 active lots for sale and 4 lots pending in Haiku. Twelve of the 41 active lots are priced over $1,000,000. It appears as if there is healthy inventory to choose from in all segments of the Haiku land market. However, it could be argued that there is a lack of premium view lots that are well located and market priced. I can?t see the threat of price increases in the Haiku land market at any point in the near future.

Do Your Kids Wear Sunglasses? Here's Why ... - The Motherhood

When I was a baby (or so my mother tells me), I would scream and cry when she popped me in my stroller and walked toward the sun. Turning the stroller around and walking the other direction flipped an off-switch on the crying ? and it didn?t take her long to figure out that the sun hurt my eyes, and from there, outfit me with sunglasses.

?

Turns out, I was ahead of my time.

?

In a fascinating briefing session with nonprofit trade association The Vision Council last week, we learned about the long-term health consequences ? for kids in particular ? of neglecting to wear sunglasses outdoors.

?

You?ve heard of those pesky UVA and UVB rays, which give us painful sunburns every summer? Even while wearing SPF 90 sunscreen? (Okay, maybe that?s just me.) Those same rays are very harmful to our eyes, and according to optometrist Dr. Dora Adamopoulos, children have immature lenses that make them especially susceptible to the effects. Just as we wear sunscreen to protect our skin, sunglasses are a crucial tool for protecting our eyes, even on cloudy days.

?

Keep your kids? eyes, and your own, safe and sound behind a pair of UV-protective sunglasses! Make sure you buy from a reputable retailer (a drugstore, eyewear store, anywhere but popup street vendors or online auction sites), and look for a sticker that says ?UV 380.? In addition to reliability, here are three other things to consider when you purchase sunglasses:

?

1) Comfort! You won?t wear your sunglasses if they don?t feel right.

?

2) Lifestyle. What will you be doing when you wear your sunglasses? If you spend a lot of time at the pool or beach, maybe polarized lenses (which reduce glare) are best for you. If you play a lot of sports, look for impact-resistant lenses.

?

3) Design and fit. You want to look good in your sunglasses. If you feel self-conscious wearing them, they?ll stay in your purse, where they won?t do your eyes any good.

?

But what about your kids?? It?s never too early to start encouraging them to wear sunglasses, as my mother proved when she bought me a pair at the ripe old age of 10 months. You can use the checklist of reliability, comfort, lifestyle and design/fit when you?re choosing sunglasses for your kids, too. If you still have trouble getting them to keep their sunglasses on, take this advice from Jamie Shyer, a chairman to The Vision Council and father of two: ?As parents, we always have to be creative. If your kids like stickers, you might try letting them put two to three stickers on glasses to give them some independence. I recommend limiting sticker use to the frames so that you don?t cover any lines of sight.?

?

Jamie also suggested outfitting your child?s favorite stuffed animals with sunglasses and setting a good example yourself by wearing your sunglasses every time you have the opportunity. It will be good for your eyes and reinforce sunwise behavior in your kids ? a win for everyone!

Credit Report Errors Persist As Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

When Frank Deyoub and his wife were thinking about names for their newborn son, one moniker was completely off the table: Frank Deyoub.

"If I named my son after me, he would have all the issues I'm having," says 35-year-old Deyoub, who lives in Royal Oak, Mich., with his wife and now 8-year-old son. "I've gotten denied work, I've been embarrassed. It's made people in my own family look at me differently."

The problem? Deyoub's credit report, the data file of all the money he's borrowed or tried to borrow during his adult life. Most American consumers have a credit report compiled by each of three large private ratings companies: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Banks, landlords and even employers and use these reports to decide whether or not to trust someone with almost all the critical pieces of an adult's financial life: a job, credit card, auto loan, mortgage. At best, a blemished credit report translates into more expensive borrowing costs; at worst, it means a lost job, car or home.

For Deyoub, who works at a medical equipment company, the distress is devastatingly personal. His descent into credit report hell began 15 years ago, when he claims his father, Frank Scaramuzzino, stole his identity and used Deyoub's unblemished financial record to buy two houses and three cars.

Around the same time, a former high school classmate, a drug user, allegedly began using Deyoub's name when the cops arrested him. Since then, some credit companies have sent Deyoub reports that list his classmate's criminal history as Deyoub's, or that attributed his father's purchases and debts to him.

Scaramuzzino, who received a two-year prison sentence for federal tax evasion in 2009, told The Huffington Post that his son's version of events is inaccurate, that "there was never identity theft or fraud." He acknowledged that some of his own financial information made it onto his son's credit report, but said that may have been due to a clerical error, since the two men had the same name at the time. (Frank Deyoub legally changed his last name from Scaramuzzino in 1998.)

As for Deyoub, he says he doesn't have much of a relationship with his father anymore. Still, Deyoub finds that some credit-reporting and background-check companies continue to mix up the two of them.

"Someone's not really thoroughly checking this," Deyoub told HuffPost. "This is supposed to be gospel of who you are and how you handle things."

Last week Deyoub and countless other Americans with credit report horror stories got a little message of hope when the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced that it would oversee the credit reporting industry as of September 30. Previously, the credit reporting companies have been regulated by the Federal Trade Commission under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. With the CFPB's new role, it is the first time that a single government agency will have complete access to credit bureaus and have some enforcement authority.

The CFPB, a one-year-old agency founded in the wake of the financial crisis to look out for consumer interests, said it will improve the way bureaus address accuracy. The agency will monitor the accuracy of information furnished to credit reporting companies, and will look at how reporting companies assemble that information. The CFPB said it would also examine how the bureaus handle corrections.

Over the years, Deyoub's tried to fix errors on his credit reports. Yet they persist. TransUnion lists Deyoub's birth year as 1953 (it's 1977). TransUnion doesn't have Deyoub's current address on file, though he's lived there more than a year. Deyoub says he's written TransUnion to try and set the record straight. He's been able to clear up some of the mistakes with some of the companies -- which he says took months of back-and-forth correspondence -- but other errors have proven harder to stamp out.

TransUnion said it does not comment on individual cases specifically, but said consumers can submit complaints through the company's website.

There's wide disagreement on the accuracy of credit reports. Studies from consumer groups have shown 25 percent to as many as 80 percent of credit reports contain some error that may or may not affect one's credit score, the number used by the big agencies to rank a consumer's credit-worthiness.

The credit bureaus say the numbers are nowhere near that high. The Consumer Data Information Association, a trade group for the credit reporting industry, points to statistics published in May 2011 by the Policy & Economic Research Council. That study, which was underwritten by the three biggest reporting bureaus, showed less than 2 percent of credit reports had errors that led to a score change of 10 points or more.

Norm Magnuson, a spokesman for the CDIA, said credit bureaus update consumers' files every 30 days and that lag time can skew the error rate higher. But consumer advocates point out that even a very low error rate, like that cited by the industry, still affects millions of consumers.

Sometimes the error can be as simple as one name sounding like another. Sandra Cortez, a Colorado accountant and grandmother, learned this the hard way in 2005, when a credit check at a local car dealership returned unexpected results: Cortez was supposedly on a government watch list of individuals suspected of having ties to terrorism. In reality, the person on the watch list was a different woman named Sandra Cortes Quintera, but Cortez didn't learn of the mistake until she'd spent a few anxious hours thinking she was about to be arrested by the FBI.

Pamela Banks, senior policy counsel for nonprofit consumer organization Consumers Union, said errors persist because of lack of enforcement by regulators, lack of investigation into errors by reporting companies, and consumers themselves not doing enough to monitor their own reports.

One reason some errors are perpetuated is because of how the bureaus match information from creditors with credit files, according to Chi Chi Wu, an attorney with the National Consumer Law Center. Wu said that some data-matching formulas only require seven out of nine digits of a Social Security to match, which can lead to credit files that contain information from more than one person.

"[Credit bureaus] don't undertake meaningful investigation, and automate everything in order to save money," said Wu.

There are approximately 3 billion credit reports issued each year by the three biggest reporting companies and more than 36 billion updates made to consumer credit files, according to the CFPB. Tracking all that information is a herculean task, to be sure. But consumer advocates brush off any suggestion that volume has anything to do with accuracy.

But many consumers are not doing their part, either. Less than 40 percent of Americans actually bothered to take a look at their own reports last year, according to the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

"People chase their credit scores, but they skip the first step and obtain a credit report," said Gail Cunningham, director of the NFCC.

What Injuries Does a Sports Medicine Doctor Treat? | General health

Health and Fitness | General health | * Written by Aloysius Aucoin | Thursday, 26 July 2012 10:46 | Word Count: 546

A sports medicine doctor is one who specializes in treating a wide variety of sport-related injuries. Some have orthopedic training from completing a residency at a surgery center, but others are non-surgical doctors who completed their residencies in a family practice or other non-surgical environment. Once their residencies are done, these doctors typically complete a one to two year fellowship program that focuses on treating sports injuries.

What Types of Injuries to these Doctors See?

Amongst the common sprains, deep bruises, fractures, and broken bones, a sports medicine doctor will probably treat a wide variety of less known injuries:

Compartment Syndrome

Compartment syndrome is an extremely painful condition caused by overly swollen muscle tissue that invades the space meant for nerves and blood vessels. This condition can either be acute (caused by a one-time injury) or chronic (caused by continued overuse.)

Shin Splints

Although widely used to refer to any sort of leg pain experienced during exercise, shin splints refer specifically to pain which runs along the tibia, the large bone located in the front of the lower leg. Pain can occur in the foot and ankle, or along the inner edge of the bone.

This condition can often be avoided by using correct posture when running, completing a warm up routine which includes stretching before beginning exercise, avoiding doing too much training at once, and by wearing shoes which provide sufficient support.

Achilles Tendon Injury

The Achilles tendon connects the calf muscle to the back of the heel, and is one of the most common injuries involving muscle tendons. When this tendon is weakened through overuse or improper use, it can cause a sudden and agonizing painful injury. Achilles injuries tend to occur in middle-aged "weekend warriors" who don't exercise regularly or don't stretch before and after their fitness sessions. They are also common among athletes who play professional sports like football or basketball - those that require quick-acceleration.

Joint Dislocation

A joint is the area where two bones meet. In many contact sports (like football or basketball) or other high-impact fitness activities, athletes are prone to dislocation of certain joints like the hand or shoulder. Occasionally the knee, hip, or elbow may become dislocated, but these are not common injury sites.

A joint dislocation requires immediate medical attention, and you'll probably want to follow up with a sports medicine doctor if there are any complications during recovery.

Traumatic Brain Injury

While it's incredibly uncommon, it's not completely unlikely for a sports medicine doctor to treat a patient with traumatic brain injury. There are two major types of injury: Closed and Penetrating. A closed injury occurs when the victim's head hits another object with sudden violence, but the skull remains intact. A penetrating injury occurs when the object breaks through the skull, affecting the brain tissue below.

A concussion is the mild form of a traumatic brain injury. Many victims recover completely with plenty of rest. On the other end of the spectrum, these types of injuries can cause serious side effects, even death.

Any of these injuries can benefit from the expertise of a well-trained sports medicine doctor.

Facebook shares tumble 15% following weak 1st earnings report

Shares in Facebook Inc. plunged 15 per cent to below $23 US Friday after the company posted an underwhelming first earnings report as a public company after markets closed on Thursday.

Facebook stock on the Nasdaq was changing hands at $22.93 a share, off by almost $4 at the first chance most investors had to react to the company's earnings release.

The company saw strong growth in its user base, and now has 543 million active mobile users. That's up by almost two-thirds from this time a year ago. Across all platform, Facebook had 955 million active monthly users as of June 30, up 29 per cent from a year ago.

But the company isn't increasing its revenues as quickly, so the increase in its user base without an accompanying boost in revenue is actually squeezing profit margins as costs inch higher.

The company posted an adjusted profit (excluding one-time charges) of 12 cents a share and revenues of $1.18 billion in its first quarter as a public company. A year ago, the company pulled in $895 million.

"Growth is still at the low end of acceptable," independent technology analyst Carmi Levy told CBC News. "We still don't know whether or not this is a one-trick pony, or if Facebook really has a plan to drive consistent growth quarter after quarter."

The company actually reported a net loss of $157 million, or 8 cents per share, in the April-June period, mainly because of compensation expenses it incurred when it paid $1.3 billion in restricted stock and related taxes for employees as part of the initial public offering. The loss compared with earnings of $240 million, or 11 cents per share, in the second quarter a year ago.

Facebook shares are now trading at their lowest level since the disastrous IPO on May 18 at $38 a share. In the days and weeks following that IPO, the shares never rose above that initial $38 price.

Personal Productivity: 3 Time Allocation Tools For The Mission ...

When it comes down to personal productivity, handling your time and energy well is a real concern. Yet, for social and mission-driven entrepreneurs like you, the ?hard-core? discipline of a Stephen Covey 1-2-3 planning system may not work. For you, creative flow, creating new ideas, being spontaneous must be of the same importance as checking off your-to-do list.

In this article, I?ll teach a bit more of a creative, intuitive process that may keep you energized and galvanized for the long run.

First, we?ll address what resource management really means. It implies that:

a) you've got to change your calendar from a slave driver to your no.1 reason keeper
b) that you will need to focus on what?s most determined for you the leader.

To form a calendar that let?s you get tons done which helps you breathe inspiration, the way to do that's by creating different categories on your calendar (I love doing that with Google calendar and then share each one of them with my office manager so she will take on my scheduling).

Here is a list of items that I would recommend you add to your calendar. By the way, I add them at a rather random time and add the word [Floater] to the task. This way I'm aware That I have some time planned for them but I will move them around to accommodate other engagements since they aren't time-dependent:

1. Creative time bites

These are weekly or even twice weekly time slots of several hours that are open to be used as you think fit. Just scheduling this, will give you a feeling of liberty and creative surge, I promise.

2. Email time slots

One of the largest wastes of our generation is answering electronic messages twenty four seven as quickly as they come in. Here's what I?d recommend: Create 2 half-hour slots and one 1-hour slot. Use the half hour slots to go thru your email, answer? really quick? ones immediately and place the ?task-heavy? ones into a ?to-do? folder. Now you have masses of time on your 1-hour slot to work down the mails that mean you have to perform a job. Result: at the day's close, your mail is empty.

3. Break slots

Yes, for entrepreneurs who depend on their intuitive decision-making process, you want regular breaks to recharge and reconnect . The illusion that you do not have time for breaks (which you share with many others ), is the most important reason why we think we are productive when we?re just truly, only busy.

Ok, I could go on except for now, just add those 3 ?floaters? to your day and week, and exult in the confidence, increased creativity and smoother work flow you gain from it .

Now to concentrating on what?s really vital for you. Yes, you are at a place now where you don't have to do all the tasks yourself any longer. You've a team to support your business expansion, yet, on occasions you find yourself still executing on jobs that may be done by somebody on your team.

The solution: Every Sunday evening, prepare your calendar for the week. Create your ?floaters? and then judge all of your others tasks on your job list. Make sure that ONLY you can work on them. Be rigorous. If you know you could train someone else, discipline yourself to do that. Yes, it may cost a bit more time at this time but then you don't ever have to do it again. Your skills are unique, identify the ones that bring ideas, impact and income to your business, delegate everything else.

In the week, you will find that you will get tempted to put out fires that come to you from all angles. Again, stop, breath, ask if it is most purposeful for you to become involved in that activity. If not, either delegate now or create a task in your project-management tool which will remind you to train somebody next time. You owe it to the planet , your team and you to be thorough with your purpose.

DNP This is the Modem World So what's with the tech backlash thing

Just over a month ago, Apple launched its svelte new MacBook Pro with Retina display. Powerful and beautiful, we all fell in love with the new device, jammed up Apple's ordering process, and prepared to queue up for a hot new Mac all over again.

Then we woke a day later to a slew of realizations: the unit is hard to upgrade, software isn't optimized for the new display, and repairs will be expensive, if not impossible. Then we heard that some Retina screens were having color issues. So we rioted. We hated it for being limited, for not being the sexy woman she promised she was the night before.

Toy maker sues Lady Gaga over bungled doll deal

NEW YORK (AP) ? A toy company is suing Lady Gaga for more than $10 million, claiming the pop star sabotaged a deal to make a doll in her likeness that would play snippets of her music.

In a suit filed in New York City on Tuesday, MGA Entertainment, the maker of the popular Bratz doll line, said it paid a $1 million advance to the company that handles Gaga's merchandizing and spent a mint racing to meet deadlines to ship the dolls this summer.

The dolls were to feature some of the singer's outlandish costumes, as well as a "voice chip" with samples of her songs.

But the toy maker said the plan was derailed in the spring when the merchandizer, Bravado International, abruptly tried to back out of the part of the deal allowing the dolls to use the singer's music. MGA said Bravado then tried to delay sales of the doll until next year, when her new album is expected to be released.

The toy company claimed the singer's representatives ultimately stopped cooperating with the project while she went on a world tour. MGA said her refusal to sign off on the final doll designs is jeopardizing $28 million in expected revenue from the fall shopping season and holding up orders from 10 countries.

A representative for Lady Gaga called the lawsuit "ill-conceived" and said there was "no legitimate reason" to drag the singer into a dispute primarily between MGA and Bravado, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group.

Bravado issued a statement through a spokesman calling the lawsuit "meritless."

In the lawsuit, MGA's lawyers claimed that Lady Gaga's representatives were initially thrilled with the doll prototypes, although they had asked for a few tweaks. In one email cited in the lawsuit, Bobby Campbell, the vice president of Gaga's management company, the Atom Factory, asked if the doll could be "more supermodel-like" with "more of a cat-eye and sexier, poutier lips." He also discussed a doll with a removable head that would pop off to reveal a bloody stump.

"We would like to see options with and without a bloody stump for comparison," he wrote.

Creating Video Tutorial ? How To Make Quality ... - Web Doctor 2.0

Posted on July 25th, 2012 Web Doctor

Custom Online Videos

Are you targeting specific group of people to avail of your product or service? If yes, creating video tutorial can help you on making your brand more visible to them. In fact, these filmed tutorials have already done wonders to varied businesses that took a chance on them. One survey even shared that they will never go out of trend because they satisfy the need of human beings to learn about new things. This also explains why they continue populate video streaming sites.

With such a scenario, online users are faced with the dilemma of choosing SEO videos that are worth their time and attention. This is definitely related to the fact whether their choices could be of help to them. If you are a business owner who wants to make use of online video tutorials for your marketing campaign, read on the succeeding insights which are aimed at producing worth-watching instructional clips.

Here are some point that can help business owners with that objective. Instructional clips are dependent on excellent image. This helpful for people who learn best with pictures presented to them. Whether what you have are combined still photos or video clips, make sure they hold high resolution so that they can survive needed editing processes.

Since these visuals are educational in nature, counting on the audio-visual input would not be enough. Viewers will get your message clearly if appropriate text on the screen appears. They can come in the form of subtitles, text batches in between scenes and thought bubbles. You have the option to put in text everything in your audio or just select a few words or phrases which you need to put emphasis on.

Creating video tutorial could be very challenging especially to the newbies. A great number of instructional clips are already enjoying the top spots in video streaming websites like YouTube, Vimeo and Ustream. How can you compete against them? By providing additional information or features that these videos have. Study the instructional clips dominating in your niche. Know what they have in common. Include in your video that thing that they do not have.

Have a solid script to follow for the creation of your educational vids. This would be the foundation of the message that you will be communicating to your audience. Stuff in it all the important information that you have gathered. Incorporate in your script a checklist of the entire discussion. This is a great aid for viewers who are needing a recap of all the essential points that were tackled. Moreover, this could be added feature that other videos may not have and so you better take advantage of this.

The last point on creating video tutorial is the running time of your clip. Ensure that the length is at a desirable range so that the viewers would not be bored, as advised by David Jenyns. However, do not cut important details just to make the video shorter. Should your topic require a long video, consider breaking it into shorter ones which could represent a series. This will aid in the easy understanding of your topic by the viewers themselves.

New York Times ends support for BlackBerry, WebOS apps

Looks like the New York Times is signaling the death knell for RIM, albeit subtly. In a move that surely underscores the withering faith content companies have for the once beloved platform, the venerable Sulzberger-backed news organization has pulled all support for its DealBook Reader and NYTimes app for BlackBerry as of July 23rd. Users that attempt to access that application in the days since will find a stale content list that no longer updates and are being urged, instead, to visit the paper's mobile site for a "more complete... experience." And as if the ailing Waterloo-based company hadn't suffered enough indignity, it's been cast out of the developer pen alongside WebOS, joining PalmPre users on the reject list. Not to worry though, the Times crossword app has yet to get the axe -- that's got to be some consolation, no? You can check out the NYT's official line on its decision at the source below.

[Thanks, Dhruv]
